Child Sexual Abuse

This assignment is designed to encourage you to relate your learning in human development to “real-life” issues faced by people.  You will select one of the “life circumstances” that follows (for example: “your child is diagnosed with ADHD”).  Once you have your life circumstance, you are to research in-depth how it will affect your development.  When appropriate, focus on the challenges facing you as a parent or educator, and facing your child. (for example, if your child is diagnosed with ADHD, what affect does this have on the entire family?  How does it affect your child’s social development, intellectual development, emotional development, etc?).Your project should be 8—10 pages not including cover sheet and reference page, typewritten, double-spaced, one-inch margins, referenced in APA format, and written in first person.  It will be important to incorporate a current literature review (this means no sources more than 10 years old, unless it is a classic source).  Remember, this is a research paper, not an opinion paper, and sources should be cited within your paper.  Other appropriate references include books, reasonable websites, and personal interviews.  This project is worth 100 points.

Criminological Research

Maxfield & Babbie, Chapters 4 & 7 ·  Pearson, Chapter 2 ·  Hartley, Chapter 2     After you read the assigned chapters, what types of research methods (various types of survey methods and experimental ones, as well as several qualitative methods) are more popular or suitable in criminological research?  Please explain your answers. To adopt an appropriate research design, what are conditions/situations that should be considered first? (The reasons authors chose their research methods in the research paper published in Hartley’s p. 111-126 (the optional textbook) may provide you with some good information.)  If you do not buy the optional textbook, you may find the journal article (in Hartley’s book) through an online journal library, Here is its full information: Batton, Candice, and Kadleck, Colleen. 2004. “Theoretical and Methodological Issues in Racial Profiling Research.” Vol. 7 (1), Police Quarterly, pp: 30-64.

Justice And Law

Most individuals, when they think of justice believe that it should be fair, equal, and impartial, yet, when justice is meted out we sometimes find out that none of the three are present. We all have heard at least once in our lives that life is not fair, we discover that not all are equal, and that favoritism is rampant in society. Such is life and then we must take a course in ethics and we look at things and question right and wrong. How do we maintain our morals and remain ethical? This week’s activity is dealing with justice and law. You will complete three short activities related to justice and law; the instructions are as follows: Who Should Be Promoted? You are on a promotion committee to recommend to the chief of police a candidate for a captain’s position. All the nominees are lieutenants and have received similar scores on the objective tests available for the position. The following are the candidates: A thirty-nine-year-old woman who has been with the police department for nine years. She has obtained a college degree and a master’s degree by going to school at night. She has spent relatively little time in her career on the street (moving quickly to juvenile, community service, and DARE positions). A forty-six-year-old white male who has also had experience in command positions in the army before joining the police force. He has fifteen years of experience—all in patrol positions—and has a college degree. A forty-year-old Hispanic male with ten years of experience. He has been very active with the community. Several community groups have endorsed him, and they demand that there be Hispanic representation on the command staff. He also has strong support among Hispanic officers, serving as their association president. He has a two-year college degree. Whom would you endorse? Why? If you need more information, what type of information would you want? Explain how you would use this information. Finally, if this information were unavailable, how would you decide? Determining Severity: Rank the following crimes in order of seriousness, with 1 being the most serious and 12 being the least serious. Explain why and how you chose your top three. What ethical system did you use? Sexual assault (with force) Death caused by drunken driving Embezzlement of $15,000 Tax evasion of $15,000 Shoplifting ($15,000) Assault (broken bones) Robbery of $15,000 Sexual molestation (no penetration) Murder (during a barroom brawl) Drug possession (marijuana) Perjury Murder in the heat of passion Ethical Dilemma Exercise. You are an ardent liberal who believes that President Trump’s election was tainted by Russian interference. You plan to participate in a march in Washington, D.C., to oppose the President and his policies. At the march, several individuals plan to jump the fence of the White House and stage a sit-in. You know that the planned activities will constitute trespass and you will be arrested. Would you participate? Why or why not? Each section will be worth five (5) points and will be graded based on how the question is answered. I am looking for complete and thorough responses, in other words, a one sentence response might get 0 – 1 point, and so forth. I am looking for critical thinking and analyses. Do not forget to include your sources listed in APA format. It should look as follows:

Many case scenarios, as in real life, present a great deal of detailed information. Some of these facts are more relevant than others for problem identification. 2. Identify the key issue or issues. Texas Judiciary

Texas Judiciary Assignment Texas has an unusual appeals process for judicial cases. District courts, where trials on matters of fact are held, are separated into different types according to the kind of cases they hear. You may notice when you vote in county elections, there are civil courts, criminal courts, probate courts, family courts, etc. All these cases are appealed to a court that has jurisdiction in all of those areas. The First and Fourteenth Courts of Appeals, which meet in Houston, hear all kinds of criminal and civil cases. After that, however, the process splits again. Criminal cases go to the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals. Civil cases go to the Texas Supreme Court. Go the the Texas Supreme Court website: http://www.txcourts.gov/supreme/  (Links to an external site.) Use the “case search” feature to find a case called “Mo-Vac Service Company v. Estate of Fabian Escobedo. (18-0852 ),” decided on June 12, 2020. Fabian Escobedo was a truck driver who worked for Mo-Vac Service Company, a company out of Dilley, Texas, with a fleet of tank trucks servicing oil and gas drilling sites. Escobedo was killed when his rig ran off the highway and rolled over. His estate sued Mo-Vac, saying his death was caused by his falling asleep at the wheel due to fatigue from being “forced to work grueling hours,” and presented pretty strong evidence of reprehensible behavior by Mo-Vac. Because Mo-Vac participates in the state’s workers’ compensation system, though, a 1916 law says that Escobedo’s benefits payable through workers’ compensation are the “exclusive remedy” for this unless it can be proven that Mo-Vac basically wanted the accident to happen and believed that the his death was substantially certain to result from it – a nearly impossible standard for a plaintiff to prove in a lawsuit like this. Write a 2 – 5 page essay explaining the facts of the case and how the court ruled. What did Chief Justice Hecht say about the court’s reasoning in his majority opinion? What is a concurring opinion, and what did Justice Guzman say in hers? Note the unusual step taken by Justice Guzman in urging the Texas Legislature to take a look at the workers’ compensation law next year. Is that an appropriate role for a judge? Most important: If you had been on the Supreme Court, how would you have ruled and why? [Interesting note: You’ll notice it says “Justice Lehrmann did not participate in the decision” – it’s because she was sick with COVID-19. She’s now recovering) Submit in Word. Cite your sources.
