Theatre

Traditional and Experimental In what ways do you predict theatre will change? Or, think about what you know about theatre in your lifetime, and explain how it is different than theatre in previous chapters. What does it mean for a theatre to be not-for-profit? How is it structured differently than commercial theatre? What are the differences between existentialism and theatre of the absurd? Multicultural and Global What would be the benefits of nontraditional casting? Where have you seen it work? What are the drawbacks? Where have you seen it done poorly? Why is it important to note that Native American theatre is not historical or ceremonial? Using your knowledge of theatre history, how has crossdressing been used as both a provocative and conservative practice onstage? If and when you have attended the theatre, why did you choose to? Mannerism

Write a 250-word (minimum) essay on one of the following topics: 1) The High Renaissance in Italy represents a peak in artistic genius. Indeed, this was the high point for such great artists as Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and Raphael. It almost seems as if Art asked itself, “What could possibly come after this?” Hence, Mannerism arose, first in Florence and Rome, then the rest of Italy, and, eventually, all over Europe. But, just what is Mannerism and how did it hope to improve upon the artistic achievements of the High Italian Renaissance? Discuss whether Mannerism was a fitting and ennobling style to follow the High Italian Renaissance or a disappointing and lack-luster after-thought. Cite two specific examples, only one from the textbook, of Mannerism that support your viewpoints. Or 2) What are the main characteristics of the Elizabethan stage (or theater)? Identify the ways in which Shakespeare can be compared to a contemporary “Movie Star” or “Rock Star.” Cite examples supporting your answers to both questions. Ancient Greece

Question 1. The Evolution of Greek Sculpture As we learned this week, sculptors in Ancient Greece strove to achieve perfection in the works of art they created. Carefully examine the following sculptures and read about each one in your textbook, course and video lectures, and through reliable internet resources: Peplos Kore, from the Acropolis, Athens, c. 530 BCE Warrior, found in the sea off Riace, Italy, c. 460-450 BCE Hagesandros, Polydoros, and Athanadoros of Rhodes, Laocoön and His Sons, 2nd-1st c BCE Then, in a minimum of 2 well-developed paragraphs, answer the following questions: What specific visual similarities do you observe in these three sculptures? What specific differences do you see? Consider the representation of the figure, facial expression or suggested emotion, additional objects portrayed, and the role of the viewer for each sculpture. How is each sculpture representative of the period in Ancient Greece (e.g., Archaic, Classical, Hellenistic) in which it was created? Be sure to explain your ideas clearly and support them by discussing specific details about each sculpture. Question 2. Religious Symbolism This week, we studied cultures that recognized a pantheon of gods and goddesses, such as Ancient Greece and Rome, and also explored the early artistic objects of the Jewish and Christian faiths. Carefully examine the following sculptures and read about each one in your textbook, course and video lectures, and through reliable internet resources: Dionysiac mystery frieze, Second Style wall paintings in room 5 of the Villa of the Mysteries, Pompeii, Italy, ca. 60–50 BCE Samuel anoints David, detail of the main interior wall of the synagogue, Dura-Europos, Syria, ca. 245–256 The Transfiguration of Christ, Church of Sant’ Apollinare in Classe, 533-549 CE Then, in a minimum of 3 well-developed paragraphs, address the following questions: What is the subject matter shown in each work? What is the belief system or faith represented in each work? What religious symbols do you observe in each work? How would the setting of each work have influenced how the contemporary viewer interpreted or understood its meaning? Be sure to provide citations for any outside sources you reference in this part of your response. Respond to both questions as thoroughly as possible, making sure to use information from this week’s readings, lectures, and additional resources. All responses should be in complete sentence form, using proper spelling and grammar. As soon as possible, review and comment on the work of two of your peers. In your comments, consider areas you would suggest for expansion or clarification. Submission Details: Post your response to the Discussion Area by the due date assigned. Respond to at least two posts by the end of the week.

Gilded Age

Based on information in your textbook and today’s news, compare and contrast the Gilded Age to today’s political situation.  Remember that this is a college-level paper.  While I want your honest opinion, it needs to be a structured argument with evidence to support major points.  Be as detailed as possible and you are free to draw your own conclusions.  Do not try to argue what I would argue, your grade is based on how well you argue your point and support it with evidence.  This only needs to be two pages in length.  Remember that Mark Twain called the late 18th century the Gilded Age because while our government looked good on the outside, there was corruption on the inside.  I want your thoughts on ways in which this is true today or not true and discuss the impact of civic engagement on US politics to address some of these issues.  Do NOT simply post sentences from the chapter or other’s opinions to construct your short essay.  I look forward to reading your responses!  For more information on Gilded Age read this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gilded_Age

The Bacchae Of Euripides

You must answer all the questions in your assignment. You need to quote from the material. All arguments need to be supported by specific references. No bull-shit! College-level writing!  Upload with two-word files respectively !! Question 1:  (Only read and relate to Euripides_The Bacchae)  Please write 150 words on Pentheus’ and Dionysus’ respective ways of “protecting” the city. What kind of traditions and norms must be respected to make Thebes strong and secure — military power and social order, or piety and respect for the gods? If it is useful, you may address who their respective followers/supporters in (or outside) the city are, and how orderliness or disorderliness among these followers will lead or not lead to the stability of the city. OR you may address how long-lasting or permanent the stability of the city will be if one or the other of their orders is followed. Think about the end of the play, in other words, and who is responsible for it. You must use at least 2 quotes from the play in your post! Please note that you must include your quotes at the beginning and that they do not count as part of the word limit. Question 2 (read and relate to Euripides_The Bacchae and Soyinka, Wole_The Bacchae of Euripides)  Please find one clear difference in the endings between Euripides’ and Soyinka’s plays, and offer an interpretation for why Soyinka changed Euripides’ ending. It may be helpful to consider the context in which he (Soyinka) wrote the play and in which it was produced. You must use 2 quotes from each play in your post — 4 quotes in all. Provide page numbers for all quotes. For more information on The Bacchae Of Euripides read this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Bacchae_of_Euripides

Dia De Los Muertos

Diego Rivera depicted the Day of the Dead in his fresco of the same name, Dia de Muertos (Fig. 8.25). The Day of the Dead has roots in Mexico and in Latin American countries and is celebrated on November 1 and 2 (All Saint’s Day and All Soul’s Day), mixing Christian and Aztec beliefs. It is a celebratory and festive event, honoring dead ancestors. Look at Rivera’s fresco carefully for details of the celebration. You will see Calaveras, or skulls, skeletons, sugar skulls, and skull masks. Compare this work to Jose Guadalupe Posada’s Las bravisimas Calaveras guatemaltecas de Mora y de Morales (Fig. 1.16). Research the traditions of Dia de Los Muertos to discover some of the traditional crafts, food, and activities associated with the holiday. Create one of the traditional crafts, such as papel picado, or construct an altar to honor a deceased family member. about 150 words For more information on Dia De Los Muertos read this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Day_of_the_Dead
