The American Civil War Era
The American Civil War Era The Civil War left a lasting impact on the United States, shaping the next several decades for the country. In this course, you’ve learned how the course of the war, important battles, and the plans for reconstruction after the war ended. Write a 2000 to 3000-word essay based on one of the prompts below. Imagine that the Southern states had succeeded in seceding from the Union. How would the Confederacy have fared as an independent nation? How would success have affected their relationship with the North as westward expansion continued? How would the Confederacy have established international relationships? Consider the resources they had as a country, their economy, and the policies of Jefferson Davis and his government. The effects of the Civil War didn’t cease with the end of the Reconstruction Period. Connect and consider how the changes during the Reconstruction era affected the efforts for equality in the U.S. through the Civil Rights era to the present. >>> If I had to choose, I would choose this option, but I’m open to your advice. While the Civil War had an indelible mark on U.S. history, the resolution of the war had consequences for many other foreign nations that were dealing with the issues of slavery and expansion. Assess how the end of the Civil War affected the global slave trade and the prominent powers in Europe. Formatting & Sources Please write your paper in the Chicago Manual of Style (CMS) format. Use only the sources provided, and make sure you use and cite all of the sources provided. Do not use outside sources, do not search the internet for alternate sources, use ONLY the sources provided. Doc Holliday
An enormous literature has grown up around the notorious men (and women) of the West. Some is highly fictionalized, most is either adulatory or part of a subgenre of hostile debunking. Yet out of this discourse emerges Herdas book, which is interesting as he admittedly notes that he is pleased to present my biography of Doctor John H. Holliday to the world in order to set the record straight. In his very own words. Based on your reading of Herdas book, they call me DOC The Story Behind The Legend Of John Henry Holliday and the film Tombstone, respond to the following question: Who exactly is Doc Holliday? Your essay should be comprised of 6-8 typewritten pages, double-spaced, #12 font only (a size similar to Times New Roman as a larger font will result in the loss of points – as well for a wider margin). I would advise that you use spelling & grammar in MSWord (or similar) and avoid the passive voice. Both the book and film need to be cited in the style of your choice; you must do either footnotes or in-text citations i.e. (Shi, pg. 21) giving credit to quotes AND to an authors thoughts as well. You will need to include a works cited (bibliography). Note: a works cited is not part of your page count. Please do not plagiarize.
Development of the United States
Final Project HIST 1306 Over the course of the semester, I have argued that four historical forces shaped the development of the United States after 1877. These were: 1. The migration of people from throughout the world to the United States as well as the social mobility (both upward and downward) experienced by all people within the nation; 2. The efforts to expand (and restrict) democracy, equality, and individual rights in the U.S.; 3. The rise of a capitalist economic system and the subsequent (and recurring) reorganization of Americans daily lifewhatever their social status or region; and ***4. The effort to create a multi-racial, democratic social order in a very diverse nation. (My Choice)*** In this project, you will choose the one force that you think was most responsible for the development of the United States after 1877 and formulate an argument that defends your choice and demonstrates why you think the others were relatively less important. Keep in mind that there is really no correct answer for this assignment. Each of the four choices outlined above is a valid option. That said, there are correct and incorrect ways of completing this assignment, and you should therefore play close attention to the requirements. Project Requirements 1. General: You will submit a four-page paper. This is a hard space limit. If your paper is less than 3.5 pages long, I will penalize it. If your paper is more than 4.5 pages long, I will penalize it. Title pages, endnote pages, and bibliographies do not count toward (or against) the space limit. 2. Thesis: Your paper will have a thesis. (Something like Force X exerted the most decisive influence on American history after 1877.) It should appear in the first paragraph of the paper, if not the first sentence. Your conclusion should restate your thesis. 3. Organization: About half of your papers body should be dedicated to defending the importance of the force you selected. The other half should demonstrate why you think others were less important. I expect you to outline (I do not need to see it; Ill know). Dont use topic headings. This is a short paper, and they just eat up space. 4. Sources: You should use both the textbook and the videos. Parenthetical citations are fine. For the textbook, they should look like this (Keene, 413). For the videos, they should look like this ([video title], [Min]: second). Here is an example (World War I, 19:22). Revolutionary Concept
Choose one revolutionary concept to examine (see list of suggested topics below). Where did this idea originate, and how was it manifest (if at all) in the American and French Revolutions? Answer this question with analysis of primary sources related to the American and French Revolutions and relevant sources from the Enlightenment and English Constitutionalism. The essay should be 500-750 words. Incomplete list of revolutionary concepts: -The social contract (government is formed by individuals to protect fundamental rights) -Freedom of conscience and expression -Popular sovereignty (the “people” rather than ruler possesses ultimate governing power) -Meritocracy (status and power based on ability rather than blood or lineage) //////////////////////////// Letter grades will be assigned as follows: A : Essay is well written and well organized with only minor spelling and grammar errors. It demonstrates a strong command of the relevant course material, responds directly to the prompt, has a clear and compelling thesis, solid evidence in the form of well-chosen and appropriately cited quotations and specific references to the requested source(s), robust analysis, logical reasoning, and meets the target length. B : Essay demonstrates a solid command of the relevant course material and responds to the prompt yet has at least one significant flaw in the quality of writing, organization, historical accuracy, logical reasoning, use of evidence, citations, or length. C : Essay engages the course material yet falls short of responding to the prompt in a satisfactory way–for example, it might summarize the content of the primary source(s) and/or textbook without providing much analysis or original argument. It may have numerous major flaws while still demonstrating a minimal grasp of the relevant course material. /////////////////////////// Preferably answer essay prompt on Social Contract or Popular Sovereignty. Not looking for an outstanding essay or perfect. Somewhere around a B. I uploaded a file regarding my professor’s grading policy. Just something that answers the prompt. Will include sources regarding these topics. No need for a works cited no bibliography. Just in text citations. For the citations, I included in each file what the correct citation should be.
high school ethnography
For this assignment, you will be writing an ethnography of at least 1000 words and reviewing the ethnography of five of your classmates. Your ethnography can address any aspect of everyday life at your high school. However, you should be careful to create an integrated ethnographic essay, rather than a disjointed collection of poorly related ideas. Here is how I suggest you approach this writing project: Think about the thing which you most want to say about your high school, and focus on that. This is your main topic. Be aware that you will have to leave some important parts of your high school experience out. Focusing on your main topic means that some things which aren’t related to this topic will have to be left out. Create an outline for your essay. You will probably end up writing six to ten paragraphs, so you should probably think about what you want to say in each paragraph. Of course, you may have to revise or even abandon this outline as you write, but it helps to start with a guide. the focus of your essay should be on your own high school. After reading this essay, the reader should have a sense of what your high school is really like. it should be written in a coherent way
Southern Slave Owners
The Civil War was fought because of slavery and the breakup of the Union. The Southern slave owners would argue that they were ?ghting to keep states rights, meaning they were dependent on a slave economy and believed they had the right to keep their livelihood, as they knew it. Northerners and President Lincoln entered the war initially to keep the Union intact. However, war aims would evolve and, with that, northern soldiers would ?ght to emancipate slaves. By 1862, the war turned into a hard war and only the destruction of the enemys forces and unconditional surrender would end it. Agreeing to the unconditional surrender, though, did not mean reconstructing the Union would be simple. Keeping these factors in mind, compare and contrast wartime Reconstruction, presidential Reconstruction, and congressional (radical) Reconstruction. What were the key di?erences among the three phases? Were there any similarities in the phases? PRIMARY SOURCES 14.4 John Beauchamp Jones Observes The Deterioration on the Confederate Home Front (18631864) 15.2 Mississippi Black Code (1865) For more information on Southern Slave Owners read this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slavery_in_the_United_States#Black_slave_owners
The Struggle for Freedom
Students should cite · The Textbook Clayborne Carson et al. The Struggle for Freedom · Any documents, documentaries, or weblinks And, any notes that you take during the class lectures or via Powerpoints. In general, source citations for this class should be formatted according to MLA format (for a good website that covers MLA style, try the MLA Formatting and Style Guide at the Online Writing Lab at Purdue University type Purdue OWL into Google). However, in order to keep things simple, here are some basic guidelines to follow when citing sources within your essays for this class:1. Please use in-text and end of text citations in your work (see examples below); 3. Do not provide a citation for every sentence, even if you are paraphrasing extensively. Instead, if all the information in a paragraph is from one source, just provide one in-text citation at the end of the paragraph; 4. You need to provide the last name of the author whose work you are using (i.e. Carson or Thompson, not Clayborne or Sharita). 5. You MUST make an effort to give credit to those whose work you are using. Failure to do so is considered plagiarism, and will have a negative impact on your grade. In-text citations: MLA format follows the author-page method of in-text citation. This means that the author’s last name and the page number(s) from which the quotation or paraphrase is taken must appear in the text. The author’s name may appear either in the sentence itself or in parentheses following the quotation or paraphrase, but the page number(s) should always appear in the parentheses, not in the text of your SITE VISIT This assignment requires students to visit a historical site (historical home museum, Civil War battlefield, Park, monument etc.) and produce a Powerpoint presentation that highlights the site. You are welcome to safely visit a historic site in person. However, you can find a site that will provide you with information (photographs, history of the site, information about the person, place, or event etc.) online and create a Powerpoint presentation with the information you found on the website. For example, The Frederick Douglass House highlights the Washington, DC home of historical figure Frederick Douglass. You can also garner ideas about local sites (Prince Georges County, MD) by going to http://www.pgparks.com/1883/Sites-Museums. You should produce a short Powerpoint presentation (minimum of 10 slides) that emphasize what you learned from visiting the site. Consider these questions, what/who was highlighted? What did you learn from the site? What did they do well in developing the site/website? What could they have done better? Would you recommend this site/website to learn about this person or event? Please include photographs and any other visual For more information on The Struggle for Freedom read this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Struggle_for_Freedom_and_Democracy_Day
