Struggle For Civil Rights

Discussion #10: The Struggle for Civil RightsThroughout the 1950s African Americans in northern cities grew increasingly active in opposing discrimination and in protesting white resistance to black progress in housing, education, and employment. Martin Luther King and others embarked on a campaign of nonviolent resistance and demonstrations, which spread to the south. Some of the leadership in the Deep South responded with brutal force, taking a militant stand against change, and in defiance of federal legislation to grant African Americans their civil rights. In order to prepare for this discussion forum:Review and identify the relevant sections of Chapter 29 that support your discussion.Read the linked essay DEBATING THE PAST: The Civil Rights MovementReview the material contained in the site Responses Coming from the Civil Rights Movement. After you have completed your readings post your response to only one of the following questions:Identify and list some of the factors that contributed to the success of the Civil Rights movement. We learned that in different time periods, people used different names to talk about themselves: Hua, Huaxia, Zhongguo [the middle kingdom] were the earliest self-identifications and later, there were terms such as Han appearing in the Song, Jin and Mongol documents to address this particular group of people.Despite the changes in names, were there something persistent and long-lasting in what we consider as “Chinese culture” today? What were some of the most important features of “Chinese culture?” What were the key institutions and mechanisms that contributed to its longevity? What were the key dynasties and who were the key individuals that helped shape the “Chinese culture”?At the same time, in this class, we learned that “Chinese culture” was constantly changing and reacting to its interaction with other cultures and people, especially with the people in Inner Asia and the northern steppes. What were some of the time periods that we see “Chinese culture” heavily influenced by other cultures? Can you give some good and concrete examples?2. Discuss the relationship between China and the West (broadly defined) over the course of modern history (after 1700). How was contact first established? What sorts of people, objects, and ideas moved between the China and the West? How did large-scale Western and Japanese imperialism affect China during the 19th century and how did imperialism and China’s response change its economy, culture, and political systems? How did China interact with the West in the 20th century (the Republican era, the Mao years, and the Deng Xiaoping era) and how does China position itself now?3. Discuss the evolving roles of women within the family, in society, and in politics throughout Chinese history. Please use at least three periods of Chinese history that we have studied and concentrated on at least two topics. Topics include but are not limited to: the prescribed roles for women in Confucian discourse, female rulers in China, women in the Han gender discourse, women under the Tang Code, women in the Song commercial economy, Cult of Widow chastity, the institutions of marriage and concubinage, individualism and women, women in revolutions, and women under socialism since 1949, and many more.

National Archives

For this assignment, you need to visit the National Archives DOCSTeach site. Historians typically use two types of materials, secondary source, and primary source documents. Secondary sources are typically books and articles written on a particular historical event, well after the fact. Primary source documents are usually generated by first-hand participants. Good historians rely heavily on original materials created at the time of the event. For this reason, historians spend a good deal of time at the archives. There are many types of archives, but by far, the largest in the United States, is the National Archives in Washington, D.C.The National Archives contains more than 10 billion documents, and they have collected thousands of those in the National Archives DOCSTeach site. After you have opened the above link, click on “Menu” on the upper left, and then “Documents.” In the “Keyword” box type in the subject you wish to research. Please remember that your topic should fall within the period of history covered by this course. Typical keywords might be something like Jefferson, American Revolution, Madison, Civil War, Lincoln or any number of topics. After your images have appeared, you need to select five (5) of them that are relevant to your topic. In the upper right hand corner, just above your image, there is an icon to save that image. You will also note that below each image there is some information about that document as well as full citation. There are two ways that you can complete this assignment. Once you have collected your documents, you can create a PowerPoint, or use them as evidence for writing a 3-5 page essay. Naturally, you will need some other information, and you can gather that through the internet, or other books and articles. As a precaution, avoid using textbooks.1. PowerPoint Presentation: To complete the powerpoint you will need to collect your documents from the site. All documents must be cited, so be certain to note the citation at the bottom of each image.Must include a minimum of five slides.Presentation must include a narrative that explains the historical significance. There are a few ways to do this, but Powerpoint does have a dialogue box that is available at the bottom of each slide. You can also do this in the slide itself. It is not sufficient to have five slides with an unrelated narrative. Instead, your slides should follow a well-organized argument that begins with a thesis statement on the first slide.Project Assignment Rubric2. Paper Option:If you are writing a paper, it must be double-spaced (Times New Roman, font size 12), and include a cover page with your name, course number and course title, instructor’s name, and date.Paper should include a thesis statement, and a narrative and conclusion that defends that argument.
