This assignment requires you to write a position paper using the classical argument structure. There are five requirements for the Classical Argument Position Paper: Write a classical argument position paper of 750-850 words. Include a title page, headers, and page numbers in correct APA format. Cite at least four different sources in your paper. Imagine that you have been invited to the White House to chair a committee of senators who are charged with developing International Business Ethics Guidelines (IBEG) for the next 10 years. Choose 1 of the following issues: Human rights Political involvements by business Labor and production standards Briefly discuss the key ethical aspects of this issue, and develop an action plan that would lead people with different perspectives on these issues toward acceptable compromise and consensus. Remember that resolving ethics issues seldom requires deciding who is right and who is wrong. Rather, it usually requires identifying a grey area of commonality among a diverse set of perspectives and working to build consensus around shared ideas. Your action plan should reflect more than simply gathering all stakeholders and finding common ground; rather, it should detail the methods and processes that you will use, and the issues and concerns that you will need to consider as you strive to reach consensus on IBEG. For example, how will you identify stakeholders? How will you assign different weights to stakeholders? Are all stakeholders equal? What about stakeholders for whom there is no representative (e.g., wildlife, future generations, etc.)?

Your task is to write a paper (maximum length of two pages double spaced) that analyzes one of the following business ethical issues. You choose which issue to write about; in this assignment, reflect deeply on a topic that matters to you. Each scenario represents a conflict in an organizational setting. In addition to applying ethical reasoning and theories to your position, you must demonstrate how as a leader you would preserve the professional relationships in question and resolve the conflict. Option A: At a local restaurant a prominent politician has arrived and has been seated for dinner. Several of the serving staff are upset because they disagree with the politician’s political views. Some are requesting the manager on duty speak to the politician and ask him/or to leave. Explain what the manager should do in this situation and how they could resolve the conflict between the servers and the politician in the most ethical manner. Option B: A hiring manager has received a resume from a very promising candidate for a position that will involve working with a high performance team on a two year project. When the candidate arrives for the interview, the hiring manager notices that the candidate is pregnant. Upon learning that the candidate is pregnant, the other team members have asked the hiring manager to keep looking for a candidate who can “commit” to the project. Explain what the hiring manager should do in this situation and how they could resolve the conflict between the candidate and the other team members in the most ethical manner. Option C: A bank manager is faced with the difficult task of downsizing a department and must choose between two employees to let go. Both employees have similar performance records but the manager believes that Jill (age 30) has more potential than Jack (age 42). The manager has been told by the vice president that firing Jill would be safer since Jack’s age makes him in a “protected class” and there is a fear of litigation. Explain what the manager should do in this situation and how they could resolve the conflict between the manager and the vice president in the most ethical manner. With whichever option you choose, you must: Apply at least one ethical theory to support your position. Show how your decision would preserve the professional relationships in question and resolve the conflict in an ethical manner. It is not enough to name a theory; you must explain the theory and demonstrate how your position reflects the logic and reasoning of that theory. Remember that theory is the “why” behind your beliefs.

Remember that an unexpected crisis occurring within a planned change has no obvious precipitating causes. That does not mean there were no causes, just that these were sufficiently subtle they weren’t recognizable by the firm’s leadership or personnel. Review the peer-reviewed and professional literature for a planned change that was not successful and resulted in the organization ceasing to do business in its prior form. Identify a well-known organization that has experienced this history and research what was discovered after the organization dissolved or was purchased. Develop a timeline that provides the key elements in the organization’s history. Use visual effects such as a poster with PowerPoint, or any program you select, including Word. Be sure to include the following: Provide the history of the organization to the point of change and beyond in the timeline. Explain the planned change in which the unexpected crisis occurred. Indicate when the organization ceased to operate in its original form. Indicate when the firm reorganized and proceeded to grow. Provide a summary page with cited support and references that explains why and how each key step in the company occurred. Support your assignment with at least three scholarly resources. In addition to these specified resources, other appropriate scholarly resources, including seminal articles, may be included. Ethical dilemma and frameworks: Identify the ethical dilemma that the company presents with respect to its antitrust or consumer problem. This should be encapsulated in a single sentence. Evaluate two ethical frameworks with respect to the company’s management’s decisions that led to the situation. One of these should be the ethical framework you identify as the framework the company followed in its decision-making. The other should be a contrasting framework that might have produced a different situation for the company. Other legal topics that relate to the company’s business: Also, clearly define and evaluate three (3) additional legal topics (NOT antitrust or consumer protection) that we covered this term — and that are explained in your text and required readings, and apply them to the company’s business.
