Scientific Article
This assignment is meant to have you use what you learned about the scientific method in Ch1 on an article summarizing a Scientific Article. Remember that the scientific method is all about asking what, how and why. Scientists begin with with an area of interest that brings up several questions. After thinking about those questions they settle on the main one, which becomes their hypothesis. To test this hypothesis, they set up an experiment where they test different things. The data obtained from those tests are then analyzed and described in their results. Based on those results they will either conclude that the hypothesis was correct, incorrect, or that they need to do even more tests or studies. You have been emailed your assigned article. Please refer to page 11-12 of the syllabus on how to set up the paper and guidelines. You must submit this as a word document or pdf to the assignment in the weekly module so that it can be analyzed by UniCheck. The article will already have been submitted to UniCheck as well. Failure to follow the instructions can result in reduced points or a 0, for example: submitting another article or not answering questions. Late assignments will lose 1.5 points per day late. You must include the URL and article title or points will be deducted. Emailed articles or articles submitted in comments will not be accepted. The larger text refers to often overlooked rules and guidelines. These are the questions you will use to help you summarize your paper in 1-2 pages for full credit: 1. What background research did the authors do? What were they interested in before doing their research? (The subject the authors are interested in that made them come up with a question that lead to a hypothesis. 2. What question(s) did the authors come up with? How did this question become their hypothesis? What more specific problem or question in their background research led them to develop a hypothesis: the question or theory that can be used to build an experiment) 3. Out of all their questions what did the authors decide to look at? Based on their hypothesis, how did they decide to set up their experiment? (This would be what the authors decided to compare in order to show what they hypothesize, aka want to prove.) 4. What did they test and what did they find? (This is where you look at their data or discussion of the data and see what information they got from it. Did their data support or not support their hypothesis?) 5. Based on what they found, what conclusions did the authors come up with? Did they prove their hypothesis? (After going over their data, what did the authors conclude about their experiment. Did they get the results they expected, did they learn something new, or did they find they need to re-do their entire experiment?) 6. (This question is worth 10 out of the 25 total for the assignment) What questions do you have about what the scientists did in their experiment? What did you learn about this topic? Is this something you feel youd want to learn more about and why, or why not? How does it relate to anything you have learned in class so far? (This is where you can express your opinion A great response here would take up almost half a page) This is Alice. Here is the assignment. Dallas Willard’s The divine conspiracy: In a world that views Christ as savior and remote creator God at best, Willard’s work argues for the importance of allowing Christ and His teachings to take center place in all aspects of our lives. Willard echoes Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s idea of “cheap grace” when he calls a life lived without the clear teaching of Christ impacting our lives as being “consumer Christianity”. This critique should be between 20 pages in length.
A Study in Language
Everyone uses some form of language to communicate: hand signs, facial expressions, body language, and words. Language is one of the foundations of civilization. In the Bible, Genesis 11 mentions that everyone in the world spoke the same language, but God mixed up their languages when they came together to build a tower to reach heaven. Organizational Change Paper
For your paper, you have two options. Option one: Obtain and view one of the movies listed on the attached movie list. Obtain your movie selection early. While watching the movie, look for key moments of organizational change (including leadership and management techniques) and take notes regarding the questions below. Once you have viewed the movie complete your paper and answer all the following questions: 1. Briefly discuss the movie you selected and why you selected it. Please do not recap the entire movie, but summarize THREE key moments of organizational change you observed during the movie. Use terms and concepts from our studies to explain the nature of the changes. 2. How did the leaders handle the situations (key moments), based on your knowledge of leading change? You should use concepts and terminology found in the text or other reading from the course. 3. How would you have handled the situation differently? Again, ensure you are using concepts and terminology from the course. 4. How did the environment affect how the leaders managed change? This question is designed to help you understand how high stress, high demand situations may require different techniques than a “slower” and less stressful environment. 5. Which character resisted change the most? How would you have handled them? Use terms and concepts that we have studied in the past six weeks. Do not just give a recount of the entire movie. Note the organizational changes, the leadership styles used, the various approaches to change that are obvious, etc. The paper should be in APA format and approximately 4-5 (not including title and reference pages) pages in the main body of the paper. Each page should be approximately 350 words. Papers without at least 1400 words of text (not including title and reference page) will have deductions. Make sure you clearly show the answers to the above questions. If you use quotes in your paper you should have more than 1400 words to compensate for the quotes. Your paper should have at least two additional resources beyond the movie and the course text. Your references must have an author associated with them. Do not use information from the internet unless there is an author. Use scholarly articles. Your paper must include references to course material and other research you have done. This is typically done using in-text citations. You will not be able to achieve a passing grade without using appropriate organizational change concepts in your paper. Due by 2359 EST Sunday of week five. Submit in the assignment portion of your classroom and attach your paper. Your paper should be a .doc or .docx, no other format will be accepted. Finally, have fun with this paper, the movies are great examples of organizational change. Email me with questions. Option two: For your paper, you will consider a large organization like General Motors which has several locations (plants). You may use General Motors or any other company similar in size. For this paper imagine that the higher management of your plant has just been informed that the plant will close and about half of the employees will be moved to a different location across the country. There are about 1000 employees. Some will be offered early retirements, some will be offered a move (if there is a job for them available at the new location) and others will be laid off. Write a paper about the expected organizational changes that will most likely occur. Choose a change model and outline the steps of that model against the necessary actions that management must take. How will this company prepare their people for this planned move? Consider the period of two years for this complete shutdown to occur. Use a timeline for what and how you would proceed. Discuss the leadership styles that will be necessary during the various phases and the approaches to change that are applicable. Use terms and concepts from our studies. Within your paper answer all the following questions: 1. Briefly summarize THREE key events of organizational change you expect during the transition. 2. How should the leaders handle the situations (key events), based on your knowledge of leading change? You should use concepts and terminology found in the text or other reading from the course. 3. How did the environment affect how the leaders managed change? This question is designed to help you understand how high stress, high demand situations may require different techniques than a “slower” and less stressful environment. Use terms and concepts from our studies. 4. Which group of employees resisted change the most? How were they best handled? Use terms and concepts that we have studied in the past six weeks. Do not just recount the steps of the move. Discuss leadership styles and when and how they will change during the timeline. Which approaches to change are most appropriate? The paper should be in APA format and approximately 4-5 (not including title and reference pages) pages in the main body of the paper. Each page should have approximately 350 words. Submission Instructions: Please submit your paper into this assignment section. Your paper will automatically be reviewed by Turnitin. Deductions will apply for late submissions. Rubric
Hamlet Critical-Research
you will revise and submit a ready-for-prime-time version of the essay; the culmination of the entire course! Parameters: The essay should have a minimum of five sources; at least two should be print books,UPDATE: Due to the Coronavirus crisis, you can now use all digital resources. You do not need a print book. However, before using any open-Internet resources (something not find as an ebook in the library catalog or an article in a database through the library website), you should email me the link for approval. and the others should be scholarly articles found in the HCCS Library databases. There are TWO exceptions: you can use film reviews, which are often available on the open Internet; and, if you find an open-Internet source that you feel is of scholarly quality, you can send me the link and ask permission to use it. Although there are many wonderful things on the Internet, this project is mainly to train you in the use of traditional academic materials. So, I will look skeptically on much that you might find useful in simply Googling Hamlet. Wikipedia is a wonderful source, and I recommend using it for grounding yourself, but it is not an acceptable scholarly resource (though it might point your toward them). Also, eNotes, SparkNotes, and the innumerable other such sites are generally too inconsistent in quality to be acceptable for a formal academic project. The finished essay must be at least 1600 words long, not counting the Works Cited. It must be formatted using MLA guidelines accurately and consistently. You should construct an argument about some aspect of the play. I will provide written lectures and other forms of guidance along the way, but essentially, you should not try to explain the whole play; instead, you might focus on one character, one scene, or one clearly-defined and narrowed theme of the play. You will argue in some manner about how one should properly understand or interpret the play; or about how some aspect of the play works or functions. We will study critical discourse about the play; you will be essentially imitating the patterns, gestures, and language of literary critics in this essay. You must cite all research, using MLA guidelines. You must clearly distinguish between paraphrase and quotation. You must write clear prose, and construct unified, cohesive paragraphs.
Respond to Peers
Peer replies: Reply to at least 2 of your classmates. Be constructive and professional in your responses. Each reply must be at least 100 words to earn credit. Peer # 1: Lizbeth Cambero Landey The popular appeal fallacy convinced me to buy a Revlon hair dryer brush. I kept seeing people posting on TikTok about a hair dryer brush that worked amazingly and dried your hair in half the time. A lot of the videos had the end results and their hair looked as if they had just gotten a professional blowout, so I went to Target and bought one. Seeing a lot of people posting this product impacted my decision because it made me want to purchase it and try it out. Currently because of the election and the pandemic, I stay away from news media outlets that dont agree with my own because I find myself bothered by some of the internet trolls. I try to analyze what I hear and do my own research to fact check whether what the news is saying is the truth or not. If I hear something that Im not familiar with, I ask a close friend of mine who is very involved in the latest news and who I believe is an excellent critical thinker to explain a situation to me so I can have some knowledge to then perform my own research on the topic. The governments bias did not influence my quest for information during the election or the COVID pandemic. Despise the president downplaying the importance of masks, I continued to wear a mask whenever I was around other people and tried to maintain a 6ft distance. I overcame this obstacle by reading CDC guidelines and listening to my health care provider suggestions on how to stay healthy during the pandemic. Peer # 2: Brandi Morrison: Inductive arguments are based on probability rather than certainty. In an inductive argument, you can use a previous fact to draw your conclusion about a current decision or situation. In the reading one of the examples was, based on the findings that only 19.9 percent of 18- to 29-year-olds voted in the 2014 federal election, the lowest turnout in any federal election that young people in college today arent as likely to vote in mid-term elections and thus gear her campaign to appeal primarily to an older constituency. Its assuming that due to the previous numbers, it is possibly guaranteed the same or similar numbers in the future. This reminded me of hasty generalizations which was one of the fallacies back in chapter 3. In a deductive argument, the conclusion follows the premise if the premise and reasoning is true. One of the examples in the reading was, No dogs are cats. Mindy is a dog. Therefore, Mindy is not a cat. The conclusion in this example follows the premise because it is true. Mindy is a dog and since dogs are not cats, Mindy cannot be a cat. In deductive and inductive arguments, both conclusions follow their premises but in different ways. In a deductive argument, the conclusion will follow the premise if the premise is true. In an inductive argument, the conclusion follows the premise, but it is a matter of whether the argument is a strong or weak one. It does not have to be true or false. One of the guidelines in evaluating arguments is credibility. It is important to present facts and evidence in an argument. It is not to just support your position but to anticipate what part of your argument will attack and find evidence and research to back it up as well. It makes it easier for someone to see things from your perspective or perhaps agree with you. Without evidence, it comes off as you are making assumptions and do not actually have the knowledge of what you are talking about. Rhetoric is used in an argument to persuade others to believe in your truth. You present all your facts, evidence and position in an argument and the goal is to get people to agree with your conclusion rather than analyzing the argument itself. Rhetoric becomes a problem when someone comes up with claims that only support their position resulting in providing unbiased research and logical information. With that method, it can lead to a bigger conflict where both sides decide to argue and fight, rather than argue with reasons to come to reasonable solution.
Important to Fail for Success
Read the following quotation. The greatest glory in living lies not in never falling, but in rising every time you fall. Nelson Mandela Think carefully about the following question. Can failure make you stronger? Write an essay explaining how failure can strengthen a person. Be sure to clearly state your thesis organize and develop your ideas effectively choose your words carefully edit your writing for grammar, mechanics, and spelling
Personal Responsibility
You can write about any topic you feel passionate about, but let’s do some prewriting to help you get started. Do some free writing or brainstorming about all of the points below. 1. There are a lot of things in society that people fail to take responsibility for even though they should. My example was voting, but list some things you feel people need to be more responsible about. 2. There are issues in society that could be minimized or even solved if people were willing take the responsibility to do their part. One of my examples was recycling/trash pickup, but list some needs that you think people need to be willing to step up for and do their part. 3. Some of you may have causes or organizations that you support and feel others should be willing to support as well. List causes or organizations that you support that others should as well. 4. Finish these sentences by listing various ideas that come to mind about what your potential topic could be. * Some things I feel passionate about are… * Some things I feel need to be changed are… * If I had the power to change one thing, it would be… Now pick one or more of these ideas and write about why you think these are worth fighting for. Part 2: Decide on a Topic To submit your topic, first, answer the following questions in complete, by brief sentences. * What personal responsibility are you going to argue for? * Why did you choose this topic? Why is it important to you? * What change do you want to see happen in the topic you are focusing on? * What do you hope to learn by researching and exploring this topic? * What do you hope you can teach your reader about this topic? * *Write one paragraph about your topic. What do you already know? What do you want to know more about? Why is is important for people to take responsibility for it? Thank you!
