Canon Fodder Response

I want you to explain and explore your definitions of and relationship to literature. What you believe we should read and why? Why is it even necessary to have a class like this? Why should we care? Your first paper accomplishes two things: for you, it is a chance to articulate what you believe, to come to your own opinion, and for me, it is a chance to get to know you as a writer, to examine your tone, your organizational decisions, your rhetorical style. So… We’ve read what Griffith and Nguyen have to say; now write a solid three page (750 word) essay sharing your ideas, telling us (your peers and me) what you think and why, using examples from your own experience to support your claims as well as a quote from the book and/or the essay. You can be as creative as you want in the presentation of your ideas but what I’ll be looking for is: a clear understanding of what we’ve read (regardless if you disagree) and then your critical response to those texts using something from your own experience as evidence. Rhetorical Reading And Rhetorical Situation

Directions : First, in a multi-paragraph introduction, summarize what you’ve learned so far about rhetorical reading and the rhetorical situation. What are they? How are they related? Why are they important and/or useful? You may want to explain the process, define key terms, and discuss their value. What you say about rhetorical reading and the rhetorical situation should apply to any text. Second, in the body of the paper, demonstrate the usefulness of rhetorical reading by applying the process to one text from the “Language Acts to Address International Issues” cluster listed on page vii of Language Acts (you may not select Bush’s speech because we’ll use it as our sample text during this unit). You should identify the key components of the text’s rhetorical situation and analyze where in the text the rhetoric is (or isn’t) responsive to her/his rhetorical situation. Your paper should present the rhetorical landscape in a way that is informative, interesting, and insightful. Finally, in your conclusion, you’ll bring the two components together to argue that applying rhetorical reading to your selected text deepened your understanding of it. Essay attached as file

Forces Of Nature Exploring The Hero

You have explored Emerson’s concept of heroism in this lesson. How do his ideas align with the notes you took while reading Beowulf? Do you think Emerson would have called Beowulf a hero? Do you think Emerson’s hero could slay a monster like Grendel? Based on your reading of Emerson’s essay, Heroism, and Beowulf, select two characteristics identified by Emerson that you believe a hero must possess. Then, write an 8-10 sentence paragraph discussing how Beowulf reflects those traits through his words and actions. Be sure to include text evidence from both the essay and the story. Brief Analysis

Begin your response to Chapters 4-5 with a brief analysis of the closing exercise passage from each chapter (repeated below): Chapter 4; Passage 3 The government is spending far too much money on healthcare. The government could continue to fund healthcare for those who need it, but should not fund healthcare for people who do not deserve it. Cutting healthcare expenditures would lead to lower taxes and give citizens more spending power. With the current state of the American economy, anything that helps the citizen’s pocketbook would help America in the long run. Chapter 5; Passage 3 Online schooling is starting to become a popular alternative to the traditional classroom. Online schooling certainly has some benefits, but the downsides outweigh the advantages. For example, children who use online schooling miss out on the social interactions with other children that traditional schooling brings. These interactions are just as important to a child’s development as the lessons they receive in school. Students who don’t experience this contact with their peers run the risk of becoming antisocial and isolated. Children enrolled in online schooling also do not experience an interpersonal connection with multiple teachers. When a student has a variety of teachers, students gain from the different viewpoints they encounter while working with those teachers. Traditional schooling provides a variety of teachers who can inspire a love of learning much better than any program on a dim computer screen ever could.   After providing your brief analysis, respond to the chapters generally in about 250 words. Consider the following questions: Why are dictionary definitions of key terms and phrases used in an argument often not sufficiently helpful in determining their meaning? ARQ stresses that not all ambiguous terms or phrases are equally important. How do you determine which ones are the most important to identify? What is the relationship between ambiguity and definitional assumptions? Are there any terms used by the authors of ARQ that are importantly ambiguous? Explain. Why might it be useful for communicators to intentionally use words in an ambiguous fashion How do value and descriptive assumptions differ? If values are such important determinants of our beliefs about social controversies, if we know a person’s value priorities in a social controversy, will we necessarily know her conclusion? Explain. If we know her conclusion, will we necessarily know her value preferences? Explain. What are some questions that you can ask yourself to discover a communicator’s value assumptions? Do you believe most people are aware of what values they are assuming when they argue with you about a social issue? Why? Does it matter? From where do our most important value preferences arise? Are these good sources? Are some of our value preferences more resistant to change than others? Why? Why do so few experts (such as politicians, scientists, professors, and television pundits) make value priorities explicit? Should individuals expressing their opinions on a social controversy make their value priorities explicit? Why? How do value preferences about teaching differ among your teachers? You do not need to address all of these questions in your response, but you should aim to incorporate at least three of them.

Narrative Essay

Object and Criteria Write a narrative essay about something that happened to you, to somebody else, or about something you saw or read.  Remember, to write a narrative means to write a story, and this means you cover the events in time sequence (first to last).  Though your last essay (the descriptive essay) could have been about a person, place, object, or event, a narrative essay is always about something that happened: events, actions, incidents.  Also, know that even though you are writing a story, it needs to be in essay form:  You must have an introduction with a thesis statement (your main point, i.e. what the essay as a whole is about), body paragraphs that begin with topic sentences that relate directly to your thesis and are supported, detailed, and explained in the body paragraph, and a conclusion that unifies the essay and reminds the reader of your thesis or main point.  Use exact, precise, descriptive language, just like the last essay: you don’t just tell a story, you show it.  Please do your utmost to be clear and interesting.  Also, make sure you stay in order and pick a topic that is not too large given your length requirements.  And remember, to get to the point of your narrative (your thesis), ask yourself questions like these: What did I learn?  What is the meaning of the story I’m telling?  What is my attitude toward what happened?  Did it change me?  What emotions did it make me feel?  Was the experience a good example of something (such as kindness, generosity, unfairness, justice, love, hatred, or some other quality

Art Production

At this moment in time, we are in an extremely unique place. School Campuses are closed, theaters are closed, people are asked to shelter in place, and most of us are working from home.  This is true for artists and performers who are now stuck at home looking for new ways of doing their art. I have posted a page of links to theatres and arts companies who are doing what they can during this time to continue to be viable and  produce art for their audiences.  I would like you to take a look at some of these groups and what they are doing. What do you think about it? Do you think that this is going to change the consumption of the arts in the future? Will it change the way you consume arts? When this situation has passed (and yes, this too will pass)  how will it change the arts? Will it change our view of arts? If so, how? Or will it just go back to the way it was with no lasting impression?  https://www.hampsteadtheatre.com/whats-on/hampstead-theatre-at-home/
