Voiceover Narration
Have you ever watched a desktop documentary before? if so, which one (and feel free to share a link in your post)? In the review of Lee’s desktop film, Transformers: The Pre-make, Steven Boone writes “Without voiceover narration, the barbed satire in Lee’s “voice” is all in the choice and timing of his juxtapositions, and a precise use of the desktop environment as frame. However scholarly its origins, this video is pure cinema.” (https://www.rogerebert.com/features/kevin-b-lees-transformers-the-premake). It’s an odd but also interesting assessment. Reflect upon your experience of watching Transformers: The Pre-make (Kevin Lee, 2015). Do you agree that Lee’s film is cinematic? If so, why? If not, why not?

Ethical Persuasion
Answer each of the questions below. You can add as much detail as you wish. Be sure your answers are clearly understood by the reader. Remember, you choose the correct words, you choose the number (NOT amount!) of words to use. Your goal is to make your ideas clear and communicate your understanding of the questions to the reader. This is good practice using a couple of key ideas explored in the reading from today’s lecture.Make sure your homework LOOKS GOOD! Creating a visually appealing DOCUMENT should be a concept you are familiar with from other writing classes. A clear, easy to follow document will always aid in communication and understanding.1. Explain what this cartoon is saying about persuasive communication:2. One day at a golf tournament, a friend and I were convinced to drink several Red Bull energy drinks. We both knew the negative effects energy drinks have, yet we drank several. The Red Bull booth was a large, colorful, booth advertising free cans of Red Bull in a variety of new flavors. The booth workers were several young, attractive, women, dressed in shorts and tank tops. Looking back, it seems this is a perfect example of “peripheral route” persuasion. Have you ever experienced this type of persuasion? Provide an example from your own life.3. One of the toughest choices any speaker makes is how to use “ethical persuasion.” The author of our textbook claims speakers should always do this. But is this possible? Is it wise? Answer each of these questions with an interesting example. Your answers do not have to be based on personal experience. They can be hypothetical.Ethical behavior: do not break the law – do not speed : Give me an example when unethical behavior might be necessary and beneficial.Ethical behavior: always tell the truth – do not lie: Give me an example when unethical behavior might be necessary and beneficial.Ethical behavior: be forthcoming – do not keep secrets: Give me an example when unethical behavior might be necessary and beneficial.Ethical behavior: be kind and gentle – do not harm others (this might be hard): Give me an example when unethical behavior might be necessary and beneficial.(The point of this last question is NOT to convince you to behave unethically. It is to point out that being ethical is not always easy.)
Academic Analytical Writing
Analytical (Interpretive) Assignment GuidelinesAll academic analytical writing contains an intellectual argument or thesis, evidence to support the position, and a critical examination of various parts of the topic as well as an analysis of the topic as a whole. Analytical (interpretive) writing also should answer the so what? what is the significance of this? questions. Other questions that may be relevant include: – Why did this happen? – How did this happen? – Whom does this affected? What are the short and long-term implications of this? You need to explain why your analysis is relevant and why should I, as a reader care? The goal of this assignment is to develop and utilize analytical thinking and writing. You want to push past the superficial and dig more deeply in to the underlying reasons that may explain what you observed.Review your descriptive essay. Using bold face type weave your analysis into your descriptive essay. You are trying to take apart a scene, interaction, event etc. to examine andbetter understand it, to excavate or clarify the meaning of what you have observed and consider why it is significant. Look for patterns, themes, or contradictions. Focus on logic and try to offer evidence or possible explanations to justify/support your analysis. Your tone should be exploratory, not definitive. There are many ways to shape your analysis, depending on your descriptive essay. Some of you included very specific interactions that you may choose to focus on and decipher. Others may choose to address particular behaviors of people you observed. For ex. many of you noted the prevalence of tourists posing and picture-taking. You might ponder the significance of this behavior. Does this alter the experience of seeing? Who is the intended audience for these images? How and why do these photos circulate?Review some of the assigned readings to generate ideas about themes and patterns. Your goal is to generate 2 pages of analysis (so that your descriptive + analytical essay is a total of 4 pages).

Japanese Internment
In My America…Or, Honk If You Love Buddha, Renee Tajima-Peña remembers the summer vacations she and her family went on as a child. She characterizes her parent’s desire to go on family vacations as a way to fit in after Japanese Internment and World War II, even though she and her family were painfully aware that they were the only Asian Americans on the road.Summer vacations or the lack of a summer vacation reveal quite a bit about race, class, and gender dynamics. Look back on your own family’s vacations or lack of vacations and find at least two photos you want to analyze. Identify and describe the vacation or summer captured in the photos you selected to analyze. How might your family’s vacation/s or lack of vacations be different than the image of a middle class heterosexual white family on vacation? What might be different about the destinations, preparation, and maneuvering? You will want to answer the above questions in a 1000+ essay. Please format your essay using the Modern Language Association’s (Links to an external site.) formatting guidelines and upload load it to Canvas as a PDF file. Thank you!
