Final Project Your progress Introduction Congratulations on all your hard work that has brought you to this Final Project for course completion. This project requires reflection on the journalling activities that you completed throughout the course. The following questions relate to the course goals and learning outcomes for each module. They will guide your reflection. If you were attentive to the module activities, this project will be less time consuming than it will be if you weren’t. It requires reflection and commentary on key learning objectives as they relate to the activities. Instructions Read all of the following nine questions in Parts A, B, and C before beginning this project. Use the questions to reflect on the activities you completed in Modules 1 to 4. Write a paper addressing the following questions and reflections. The paper should be no more than 20 pages double-spaced (approximately 5,000 words) and should include examples from your journalling activities. Part A: Stakeholders and Interrelationships Describe how the activities influenced your awareness and understanding of the interrelationship between business and society. Use examples from your activities in each of the modules to support this answer. (10 marks) Using examples from your activities, describe the challenges of dealing with the conflicts and/or confluence of stakeholder needs, wants, expectations, and perspectives. Identify whose perspective you are representing in each of your examples. List examples of some of the ramifications of ignoring or improperly addressing stakeholder interests. (10 marks) Comment on how the use of “circles of reflection” can affect your perspective of an issue or situation. Cite examples from your activities to demonstrate how use of the circles of reflection affected your analysis. (5 marks) Part B: Forces and Influences Comment on how ethics and social responsibility relate to some of the internal and external forces in business and society that we discussed in this course. Review activities in Modules 3 and 4, as well as Module 2, for examples. (10 marks) Describe how the readings and journalling activities influenced your views on workplace ethics and corporate social responsibility. Did you have a shift in your perspective? Do you consider ethics and/or corporate social responsibility to be important to business and society today? Explain your answer, and use examples from the activities. (10 marks) Comment on the interrelationship between external forces such as globalization, economics, technology, and the environment, and internal influences on business and society including governance and corporate citizenship (CSR), consumer protection, employee rights and responsibilities, and workplace diversity. Remember to support your argument with multiple examples such as sample journal entries, and readings. (20 marks) Is the government an external force, an internal force, a stakeholder, or all of the above? Using examples from your activities, comment on the government’s role in business and society. (5 marks) Part C: Final Reflection Comment on how journalling activities helped you recognize the real or potential impact of stakeholder biases as well as your own biases. How do biases or differing perspectives influence the media, public opinion, and decision-making in business and society? Use examples from your activities to support your commentary. (15 marks) Describe what was the most significant learning for you in this course and explain why. (15 marks).

Research essay outline:     For the research paper , you have a choice of any piece of fictional literature (short story, poem or play) from our anthology to use as a primary source, and may choose one of the three following types of research essays, in which you will apply your research to the primary source of your choosing: 1.      Use biographical information about the author, poet, or playwright to show how events in that person’s life helps us understand some aspect or aspects of the primary source you chose. For example, you could look at the sorrowful events in Edgar Allen Poe’s life and demonstrate how they influenced the themes in his poem “The Haunted Palace” or Ernest Hemmingway’s war induced PTSD and his short story “Soldier’s Home” 2.      Use research about the historical, social, and/or gender roles at the time that a piece is set to help explain what you see as an essential aspect of the piece. For example, you could look at why Mrs. Mallard, in Kate Chopin’s “A Story of an Hour” felt imprisoned by the institution of marriage by researching marriage roles for women at the time, documents written that include women’s roles, especially wives roles, and the society’s expectations for, and limitations placed on, women of Chopin’s day. 3.      Look at a particular aspect of a piece, such as characterization, symbolism, setting, or plot in a short story or play, or imagery or figurative language in a poem or two.   Research essay guidelines:   The draft must be a minimum of four pages, typed or word-processed, double-spaced, using MLA format and MLA in-text, parenthetical citation. You must refer to (summarize, quote and/or paraphrase) a minimum four sources. Use MLA, parenthetical in-text citation in the body of the essay. Include a separate Works Cited page in MLA format. Sources used in the body must include at least three texts from our library’s databases, periodicals (newspapers, magazines, academic or scholarly journals, etc.) or three of the aforementioned and ONE valid source from your own online search (such as an article, essay, or statistics from a valid website) Sources from periodicals that you get online but that also exist in print form will not be counted as the internet source.

Parents and Children Choose two poems that fit that theme. Please use “Mother to Son” by Langston Hughes and “Those sunday mornings” by Robert Hayden. You are not limited to the poems I have given you, but if you choose a different poem, please include a link to the poem (or paste in the poem at end of your essay).  Again–one theme–two poems. Use any of these: attitude of speaker and mood of poem, sounds, repetition, powerful images. Be sure to include words and lines from the poems to explain your ideas. A “feature” is a longer story about a specific subject.  It can be a discussion of a person or item in context, or it can tell a story.  Split your feature up with at least 3 headings, and include several photos (2 requirements).  The headings must pertain to content–for example, a heading cannot be “Introduction.” You’re close to your subject, studying it over the course of this semester and discovering all the details surrounding it.  Give your readers perspective by writing in-depth about your chosen topic.  Be careful not to plagiarize. If there is a local event that fits into your category, you may attend that, take a lot of photos, and turn it into a feature. Identify relationships between subjects that you routinely cover, and write an exposé. Think about trends, undercurrents, and potentially explosive controversies within your chosen field, and then call some experts, interview people, and turn that kernel of an idea into a full-blown feature.  Use at least 2 other sources (3rd requirement for all topics). Use a variety of other voices–quotes–and be sure to tag them, eg., “According to *** who is the chairman of ***” or  “In her article entitle *** in Time magazine, *** said, . . . .” Remember to include an enticing title. And remember to use clear introductory and concluding strategies, which you have labelled. An old adage that often rings true reads like this: Posts bring page-viewers, but features bring readers.  For a real, online blog, regular readers appreciate the more in-depth articles.  Some of the most important features you might write may not get tremendous waves of page-views, but the appreciation you do receive can spread to multitudes of other readers through word of mouth, or linking on social networks.
