[SOLVED] Persuasive Essay
This writing project requires that you compose a persuasive essay that uses portions of your text to evidence an original argument. The essay must make several sub-arguments to prove this thesis. You must utilize direct quotation, paraphrase, and summary of the text as evidence. You must cite in-text and on the work 1. In the short story Recitatif, by Toni Morrison, the theme of race is prevalent, though we must ascertain on our own what race the two central characters are, including the protagonist. Going by the theory that the protagonist is often the author, we therefore assume she is black and the central antagonist is whitethough that assumption can be called into question. Assuming that, how do the races of the characters pertain to the story? What effect, if any, does race have on the lives of the two characters? What expectations do we bring to the story regarding race, and how does the story feed into those expectations? In the epiphany, when Roberta reveals that Twyla did not harm Maggie, first of all, is she lying to take mercy on Twyla, and if she is, given the theme of race, why would she lie? 2. In A Rose for Emily, by William Faulkner, the theme of desire is prevalent. Emily desires Homer. The town desires to to sympathize with Emily, eventually to stand up to her, and finally to understand her. Homer, to our read, is gay; his own desires work away from Emily. The South itself desires to work away from its history of slavery, yet, as we know historically, and as Faulkner is criticizing, what it will work toward is no great accomplishment. These desires conflict with one another, and the question becomes, how, and what results. A. How do the desires of Emily conflict with the desires of Homer? (Romantic ideal) B. How do the desires of the South to move on conflict with the concept of progress? (Political and social ideal) B1. In what ways is the town merely supplanting one bad thing with another? C. Given the story, what does the murder of Homer and then Emilys possession of him mean along these lines? (These ideals up against reality) 3. In A Good Man Is Hard to Find, by Flannery OConnor, the common readand the read Flannery OConnor herself wanted for the storyis that when the Grandmother says, Why youre one of my babies. Youre one of my own children, she is having a moment of grace wherein all of her former hypocrisy, in particular her religious hypocrisy, is supplanted by a genuine godliness. This is a poor read. The better read is that the grandmother changes not by ascending but by descending, and the Misfit changes by ascendingthe two characters, who both experience epiphanies, pass each other, with the grandmother becoming a lower person than the Misfit. What happens in the climax of the story to make this read possible? At what moment does the grandmother sink to her lowest, given this read, and how do we know, based on the denouement of the story, that the Misfit has changed? What is his change, given the storys last line: Aint no real pleasure in life. MLA Formatting Where necessary, you must use MLA formatting to quote or paraphrase textual material. The essay should be 4 to 5 pages in length, or roughly 1,000 words. [SOLVED] The Awakening
Prompt: In The Writing of Fiction (1925), novelist Edith Wharton states the following: At every stage in the progress of his tale the novelist must rely on what may be called the illuminating incident to reveal and emphasize the inner meaning of each situation. The body paragraphs should have a topic sentence driven by the thesis, at least two correctly cited quotes from the book, and ample analysis of each quote. [SOLVED] Textual Analysis
Over the course of the summer session, I am assigning two independent papers. This is the second of those. You will be writing on ONE of the books assigned during the final four weeks of the course: Aeschylus’ Oresteia Trilogy OR J.M. Coetzee’s Waiting for the Barbarians. Read through the paper prompt below carefully and take note of the due dates. Also, make sure you read through the “How to Write a Good English 1C Paper” sections of the Week 1, Week 2, and Week 5 learning modules- there is a wealth of helpful info on how to put together a paper like this. In addition, try to set up an online tutoring session with the PCC Writing Support Center at least once during the writing process. *** English 1C: Textual Analysis w/ Additional Source For the final independent paper of the summer session, I have kept it at the same length as the first paper (1200 words) and am only requiring 1 scholarly outside source. I realize the pace of these short session classes is ridiculously fast, and have tried to help makes things a little more manageable by cutting back the assignments in the class a bit. For this paper, you will choose one of the assigned books, Aeschylus’ Oresteia Trilogy OR J.M. Coetzee’s Waiting for the Barbarians, and write an extended analysis of passages from the text in response to one of the prompt topics: 1) In Aeschylus’ Oresteia Trilogy, how do some of the female characters challenge the gender stereotype portraying women as driven by emotions and irrationality? What are the plays suggesting by showing women as driven by reason and forethought as much, or even more, than the male characters? Focus only on one or two characters such as Clytemnestra, Athena, the Furies, Iphigenia, Cassandra, or any others. 2) In Aeschylus’ Oresteia Trilogy, how does the vengeance model of justice influence the events preceding and taking place in the first two plays, “Agamemnon,” and “Libation Bearers”? In what ways is the rational model of justice introduced in the third play, “Eumenides,” both rational and irrational? 3) In J.M. Coetzee’s Waiting for the Barbarians, both the girl and the Magistrate suffer mental and physical forms of torture and then are “restored” to their previous lives- the girl is returned to her people and at the end of the novel, the Magistrate is once again in charge of the settlement. How is the girl marked or changed by her torture, and how, if at all, is the Magistrate marked or changed by his torture? 4) At one point in J.M. Coetzee’s Waiting for the Barbarians, the Magistrate says, I was the lie that Empire tells itself when times are easy, he [Colonel Joll] the truth that Empire tells when harsh winds blow” (156). To what extent are the Magistrate and Colonel Joll similar and in what ways are they different? What is the novel suggesting by comparing these two characters? *** Instructions: Compose a paper of AT LEAST 1200 words that includes an introductory paragraph (including a thesis statement as its last sentence) and enough body paragraphs to meet the assignment’s minimum word count requirement. Paragraphs should be 5-8 sentences long or 3/4-1 page long. You must include at least one quote in each body paragraph (quotes are not needed in intro and conclusion paragraphs). In addition, you need to include at least one quote from a scholarly article. I highly suggest you review the materials in Learning Module 5.2 for advice on how to select and use scholarly sources. Include a Works Cited list at the end of your essay (I will provide the citations for the books and a generic citation for a scholarly article). [SOLVED] The Definition of a Good Person
My professor included what is needed for this essay, so I will just paste what she posted here. For this essay, you will define what makes a movie or television show “good.” You will need to set forth the criteria you use to judge. Unlike the evaluative essay, you will not be presenting a single example of a good movie or television show and explaining why it is good. Instead, you will be letting your audience know, in general, what you “good” means when you are talking about movies or television shows. What are looking for when you decide whether you enjoy a movie or television show? You may name specific movies or shows as specific examples in your essay, but your focus throughout the essay should be the criteria you use to define “good” when you are discussing movies or television shows. Letting your audience know your criteria is almost like training your Amazon.com “recommended” list or your YouTube “recommended” list: you are giving your readers enough information to recommend a movie or television show to you and be confident that you would enjoy that movie or television show.Anything is fine, as long as it aligns with the topic of what defines a good person.
