Week 8 Final Exam As I wrote above the final exam will be open to access on 12/9/20. The final exam is a self-reflection essay that requires you to use your critical thinking skills. Essay on Huckleberry Finn The Situation — Your Opinion Is Needed For this essay, imagine that you are the parent of an 11th grade high school student whose teacher was planning to teach Huckleberry Finn during this school year. However, because a group of parents have petitioned the school board, there will be a special meeting held to determine whether the book should continue to be taught in the school. The main objections to the book being taught are its use of the “N-word” and negative portrayals of African Americans which the parents say creates discomfort among the students. Parents on both sides of the issue have contacted you and asked for your support, and as an active member of the Parent Teacher Organization you feel a responsibility to weigh in on this issue. The Opposition Parents opposed to teaching the book reference other schools that have banned this novel in recent years, that mainly believe that “other novels that didn’t require students to feel humiliated or marginalized by the use of racial slurs” (Links to an external site.) could be taught instead. The Supporters Parents in support of the book being taught site First Amendment rights and “a duty not to give in to pressure to suppress unpopular or controversial ideas.” (Links to an external site.) Which side will you take? Does Huckleberry Finn deserve the importance among literary works granted by Ernest Hemingway when he said, “All modern American literature comes from one book by Mark Twain called ‘Huckleberry Finn’”? Or, have the racial slurs in this book obsoleted its message? Or, as some claim, is it a racist novel? In this essay, you will explain your position (you have been specifically asked to submit a written statement). To prove your point (on whichever side you take), you will need to examine and explain the value or lack of value in two to three specific episodes in Huckleberry Finn. To give your argument more weight in this very tense discussion, you will want to research what literary critics have said about the book over the years, using these positions to both support your views and refute the opposition. 103 / Review Essay Choose ONE of the following questions and answer it in an essay of 1250 words. Answer with reference to at least three texts. 1.      “Racism” is a word that people use a lot, but in this course we’ve had the opportunity to examine it in depth. What is racism? What kind of thinking underlies it? How does it manifest itself? How do people fight against it? For this essay, don’t begin with a dictionary definition of racism. Instead develop your definition of racism by using the texts we’ve studied. What understanding of racism do they lead us to? 2.      Are black folks “citizens”?

A “feature” is a longer story about a specific subject.  It can be a discussion of a person or item in context, or it can tell a story.  Split your feature up with at least 3 headings, and include several photos (2 requirements).  The headings must pertain to content–for example, a heading cannot be “Introduction.” You’re close to your subject, studying it over the course of this semester and discovering all the details surrounding it.  Give your readers perspective by writing in-depth about your chosen topic.  Be careful not to plagiarize. If there is a local event that fits into your category, you may attend that, take a lot of photos, and turn it into a feature. Identify relationships between subjects that you routinely cover, and write an exposé. Think about trends, undercurrents, and potentially explosive controversies within your chosen field, and then call some experts, interview people, and turn that kernel of an idea into a full-blown feature.  Use at least 2 other sources (3rd requirement for all topics). Use a variety of other voices–quotes–and be sure to tag them, eg., “According to *** who is the chairman of ***” or  “In her article entitle *** in Time magazine, *** said, . . . .” Remember to include an enticing title. And remember to use clear introductory and concluding strategies, which you have labelled. An old adage that often rings true reads like this: Posts bring page-viewers, but features bring readers.  For a real, online blog, regular readers appreciate the more in-depth articles.  Some of the most important features you might write may not get tremendous waves of page-views, but the appreciation you do receive can spread to multitudes of other readers through word of mouth, or linking on social networks.

In this unit we will study the effects of racism and race history in the United States. Our first case study focused on the harsh conditions of a reform school and the racism and violence young Black men faced during the post Jim Crow era.
