Locate an article relevant to supervising school counselors. It should be a peer reviewed article that has been well researched. Since you will be writing a theoretical approach paper based on a chosen model for supervision, it would be helpful to review the approaches before choosing to see if they fit the kind of supervisor you would like to be in practice. Part 1: Observation and Collaboration Observe a grade K-3 certified general education classroom during English Language Arts instruction and then interview and collaborate with your mentor teacher about literacy assessment and developing a successful literacy framework. Take notes during your interview and with your mentor teacher discuss the following: Which literacy assessments have proved to be successful in identifying student needs? How were these assessments chosen? What data collection methods are used to track and monitor student progress? How does assessment data drive curriculum and the literacy framework? What technology tools are used to focus on continuous and effective data? How is data information shared with students and students’ families? What steps are taken to monitor and adjust curriculum based on student needs What technology tools are utilized in the classroom to reinforce and develop literacy curricular concepts outlined in the literacy framework? Part 2: Reflection In 250-500 words, summarize and reflect upon your observations of literacy instruction and assessment, explaining how you will use your findings in your future professional practice. Background Information:  An integral component of this course is its advocacy for the need to establish a classroom climate and plan instruction in a manner that invites all learners, respectful of their diverse needs. Diversity issues may range from cultural, ethnic, racial and gender issues to a multitude of descriptors related to learning style and ability, socioeconomic status, and language. Throughout this course, we have discussed learning theory and teaching strategies which should enable you to build and maintain a classroom climate in which all students can be successful and to ensure that students’ respective needs are met through the use of a variety of scientifically sound teaching practices. Grouping practices, allowing choice, extending understanding and respect of cultures and ethnicity, conferencing with teachers and parents to gain an understanding of children- all reveal a teacher’s desire to meet the needs of diverse learners. It would not be possible to list all of the ways in which learners differ in their approaches to learning. It is the teacher’s role, rather, to know and understand each student so that he or she can plan for the teaching/learning relationships in the classroom. Task: Submit at least a five-page, typed (double-spaced; 12 font) case analysis research paper describing the diversity issues represented in the classroom you teach or most recently taught. Your paper will have 3 sections. Section I: In the first section, describe the contextual factors impacting the class, how you determined the diverse needs of the children, how you planned your lessons based on these needs, and describe to what degree you felt the teaching strategies you employed were successful. Provide specific examples, relating each to the strand of diversity it represents and a specific strategy you used to address this form of diversity. For example, you may have selected a piece of literature that you knew a particular child or group of children would relate to in an effort to engage all of the learners. Section II: In the second section, summarize the current research involving the diverse needs you encountered. For example, if you have ELLs, your research should include best practices for teaching ELLs. If you have students identified as needing Tier 2 interventions in reading, your research must include evidence-based practices for RtI. You must use no less than 5 current resources – nothing published before the year 2000. Section III: In the third section, reflect on whether or not your practices were congruent with the research and discuss how your future practices will reflect the current research on effective methods for teaching diverse students. There are early childhood programs all over the world that ascribe to the different approaches we have studied in this course. However, each individual classroom and/or program adapts the model to meet the specific needs of the population it serves. The Montessori program in Buffalo NY probably looks different than a Montessori program in the South of France. The teachers have been trained in the same guiding philosophy, but the approach is adapted based on the cultural context of the community. For your final project, your job is to research how an early childhood learning environment changes within different cultural contexts. The topic is intentionally broad, and you are encouraged to select an area of interest for further research, then think about how the curriculum models differ within those contexts. As you research your topic, be sure to include some potential barriers and discuss how we might address those barriers. For example: In some cultures, children are left outside to play for hours, even in the Winter; Other cultures tend to avoid outside time due to program constraints. What would Maria Montessori think about the barriers we see today, and what might she recommend? In some cultures, children play with everyday materials like sticks and stones and they climb trees during recreational time; Other cultures restrict the children to large manufactured play sets for safety. What are the specific barriers, and how would the Waldorf approach address these barriers? Other examples for topics include the cultural contexts of play, celebration of holidays within the classroom, messy activities, and regulations that restrict some aspects of the curriculum.
