Numeracy Skills
Successful teachers recognize the connections between conceptual understanding, procedural fluency, and real-world application when teaching children to make sense of numbers. They embed opportunities for children to concurrently develop numeracy skills in all math areas, including the contexts of counting, cardinality, and base ten concepts. For this assignment, select three state math standards for kindergarten related to number sense (counting and cardinality) for the selected grade level. USE GEORGIA MATH STANDARDS Using the Number Sense Standards Table, create one math activity for each standard that is developmentally appropriate for the selected grade level and that uses manipulatives. Each activity should provide: Real-world application for the math skill taught Manipulatives and other resources Differentiation strategies to meet the individual needs of all students Formal and informal assessment strategies to ensure mastery of the standards Write a 250-500 word rationale for the hands-on learning activities you created and how each supports learning of the selected standards. Discuss how each activity, manipulative, and assessment is developmentally appropriate for the selected grade level. Support your matrix and rationale with 2-3 resources. While APA format is not required for the body of this assignment, solid academic writing is expected, and in-text citations and references should be presented using documentation guidelines, which can be found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center. Before people can think of a solution to a problem, they must know the history of the controversy and the range of positions available. Paragraph one/introduction: 1. Who is interested in the issue and why besides yourself? Paragraph two/body paragraph of one point of view: 2. Your audience will also want to know the current, major positions on the issue, so draft descriptions and summaries of 2 different positions or points of view. This is where you will need to research and use Google Scholar or our college library database. Description 1 of pt of view 1 to include: summary What are the main claims of those who advocate this position? What reasons do they provide for those claims? What evidence do they use to support their reasons? An assumption is a point an author doesnt even try to prove. Rather than proving the assumption, the author simply assumes it is true. So, what assumptions underlie their arguments for position 1 if there are any? Paragraph 3/2nd body paragraph of the second point of view: repeat above Paragraph 4/Conclusion: Finally, you should highlight the relationship between the two positions youve described by answering the following questions: On what points do advocates of these positions agree, on what points do they disagree? What are the reasons for disagreement? Restate why anyone should care about this problem/issue. Other Requirements Your paper should be at minimum 2,5 pages.. Making Meaning In your role as coach and/or mentor you will likely need to help teachers understand how to make connections between the following three processes (a) making meaning of documentation evidence to (b) planning for goals and (c) learning experiences for children. After reading chapter six, and the scenario below, respond to the discussion prompt: Imagine that you are a coach who is supporting a teacher who is observing her students during small group activity time. The teacher records a lot of dialogue (words and actions) of the children arguing about the rules for putting away materials. You ask the teacher to identify a question of interest for both her and the children based on what she learned from her documentation. The question is, What are the rules (procedures) in our classroom? As her mentor, you want to begin her inquiry with backward planning. The formula you present to the teacher is as follows: a) The desired result for the children is to . . . b) The observational evidence of the children shows . . . c) Possible learning experiences could then be . . . Together, you and the teacher decide to approach the inquiry the following way: a) The desired result for the children is to . . . learn classroom rules. b) The observational evidence of the children shows . . . confusion about routines and interest in figuring them out. c) Possible learning experiences could then be . . . engaging in experiences that allow the child many ways to hear stories and repeat, describe, and act out a sequence of daily events used in the classroom community, making signs that remind children of the rules, etc. In your group response address the questions below. Groups are encouraged to share thoughts and options for answering the questions, and use Chapter 6 Appendix A Form, to support their explanations. Each group member must provide potential answers to at least two of the questions and must contribute to deciding on the response for all five questions. As in the previous weeks, one group member should post the group’s final responses and include the name of the contributing How might you support this teacher in relating the goal to a professional value, standard, or competency? What are some ways to support how the teacher might be more effective in this area? How might you support this teacher from a strengths-based perspective? How could the teacher gather the evidence before and after the implementation of the inquiry? For more information on Learning Experiences read this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Experience_API
