Sheltering instruction is an essential component of any program supporting English learners. Read the https://www.cal.org/siop/pdfs/briefs/using-sheltered-instruction-to-supportenglish-learners.pdf , which provides an overview of the major components of sheltered instruction, with some specific subject area examples. Next we will narrow our focus to one specific model,The Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP) Watch the 3 minute introduction, What is the SIOP model? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dEj6M4_iHoM The Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP) Model is a research-based and validated instructional model that has proven effective in addressing the academic needs of English learners throughout the United States. The SIOP Model consists of eight interrelated components: Lesson Preparation Building Background Comprehensible Input Strategies Interaction Practice/Application Lesson Delivery Review & Assessment Research shows that when teachers fully implement the SIOP Model, English learners’ academic performance improves. In addition, teachers report that SIOP-based teaching benefits ALL students, not just those who are learning English as an additional language. Using instructional strategies connected to each of the 8 components, teachers are able to design and deliver lessons that address the academic and linguistic needs of English learners. There are a total of 30 features embedded in these 8 components, so learning how to use the SIOP Model takes lots of time and consistent effort. We will just be doing a brief overview of Sheltered Instruction and considering 2 components; lesson preparation and building background. These 2 components cover 9 features and will help you prepare for your final assignment, in which you will begin to design a sheltered instruction lesson plan. Read chapter 2 (attached below) “Lesson Preparation” After reading chapter 2 you should watch Writing effective objectives (8 minutes) Now consider the following (these are in your required journal assignment for the module) 1. What is the difference between content and language objectives, why is important to plan both and make them explicit to students? 2. Begin thinking of a topic for your final assignment; What will the topic be and what grade will you plan for? (you can look at the standards to choose an appropriate topic and grade or pick one from the list provided the final assignment folder.) What might the content objectives be? (you should plan just one or two) Then you should read chapter 3 Building Background, attached below After reading take note of 3 big takeaways and begin thinking about how you might activate student prior knowledge and build background for the topic you chose. You may want to visit this website to support you with ideas or resources for connecting background knowledge. JOURNAL 1. What are some common features among all sheltered instruction approaches? 2. Instructional Strategies
In this assignment, you will have an opportunity to put theory into practice by creating examples of various exercises for use in the classroom. In this Individual Project, you will demonstrate a sound understanding of behaviorism and how instructional strategies can be used to enhance instruction and the overall learning process. Knowing and understanding theory allows us to better understand how people learn, which helps drive the decision-making process regarding instructional design, planning, and delivery. Educational professionals can use these frameworks to make more informed decisions about applying the most effective instructional practices. Part One Create an example of an exercise that a teacher might carry out during a 20-minute segment of a 7th-grade social studies class. Complete the following: Begin by writing a terminal performance objective for the segment. Choose your own topic (in 7th grade social studies), issue, or opportunity as the basis of your design. The exercise should clearly call for the students and teacher to work in a behaviorist mode. Both learners and the teacher should be active in their participation during the segment. Create an assessment for the exercise. After you have described the exercise, how it will be conducted, and any materials that would be associated with it, explain how it fits the characteristics of behaviorism and why you think this exercise and this approach would be appropriate for the class. Part Two Create an example of an exercise that a trainer might carry out during a 30-minute segment of a 4-hour supervisory leadership course. Complete the following: Begin by writing a terminal performance objective for the segment. Choose an appropriate topic, issue, or opportunity as the basis for construction of the exercise. The exercise should clearly use principles of behaviorism as its theoretical structure, and it should illustrate a behaviorist approach in learning and instruction. The exercise should engage both the learners and the instructor in active participation. Create an assessment for the exercise. Write an explanation of the exercise to discuss the ways in which it illustrates behaviorism, and discuss which behavioral principles or characteristics are used as the basis for design. Explain how the exercise would be appropriate for the topic, need, or opportunity for which it is intended. **Remember that you need to write this paper according to the behaviorism theory in education. USE APA FORMAT WITH REFERENCES!

Correct your draft based on your Unicheck report, then run your essay through the Unicheck report again. You may obtain up to three Unicheck reports. Submit your final draft only when it shows a high originality score.
