As an educator, each of you is responsible for the students’ safety, welfare, and learning. In addition, you are accountable for additional administrative duties that reflect your position as a professional educator. Throughout this course you will complete a learning inventory, research educational ethics and philosophy, and participate in a case study activity. For this assignment you will have two options: essay or PowerPoint (please select one): Using this knowledge, as well as your experiences as a learner and educator, evaluate your commitment to education in a 3- to 5-page, APA-formatted essay (title page, abstract, introduction, body, conclusion, and references) or an APA-referenced PowerPoint (see example attached Consider the following as you explore your position: 1. Give a brief introduction of your professional goal and explain why you have chosen a career in education. Evaluate the long-term message you want to convey as an educator. What is your strength as an educator? Consider your history in learning and determine how these experiences impact your goals or outlook as an educator? 2. Formulate your philosophy of education based on some of the research conducted in this course. Use appropriately cited references to validate your philosophy. Consider Dewey and other principal contributors to the field of education. Do you have a personal mantra by which you live, learn, and teach? 3. Identify areas in which you may be challenged ethically as a professional educator. How will you meet these challenges? Using references from this course and some of your experiences, synthesize the value of ethics in education. The purpose of these observations is to help students become familiar with various special education support services within schools.  This includes classrooms designated as resource, self-contained, inclusion and general education.  Due to the recent closings of schools, you will be watching videos of classroom observations published by school districts and other learning institutions for the purpose of teacher training. You will be assigned a small study group with 2 other classmates to discuss, collaborate and support one another throughout the course and on these final assignments.   While these videos won’t replace the invaluable experience of spending time in classroom settings, they will allow for a taste of different teaching styles and student learning needs. You are encouraged to view these with a lens of constructive encouragement/criticism.  The final three projects for this course in Module 9 will be based on your observations of these videos. Part A: 1 Hour Classroom Video Observations , 3 Summaries, Group Discussion Summary Students will view observation videos in at least 3 different classroom settings (resource, self-contained, inclusion, general education) as well as at least 1 of the provided TED talks. (See Video Resource List below) You are required to take independent observation notes for each video you select as a group.  You will be focusing on teaching style, student engagement, and the classroom environment.  Once you have shared your observation notes with your group (via google docs, zoom, etc) each group member will create a summary for 3 videos depicting 3 classroom settings (self-contained, resource, and inclusion).   You do not have to write a summary for every video viewed, just 3 classroom types.  These observation summaries will be posted in the In-Depth Study drop box.  A Summary of the group discussion and process will be posted in the In-Depth Study drop box by each member of the group.  Post your summary in the In Depth Study Drop Box. Create an observation log that list the videos viewed, URL link to video, and time viewed.  Post your log to the In-Depth Study drop box. Part B: IEP Analysis The IEP component of this assignment is meant to familiarize you with IEP’s and the IEP process.  While we would typically have you review a student’s IEP at your observation site, you will still have the opportunity to explore the components of an IEP.  Choose and review one of the following videos to get a feel for an IEP meeting. You will compare/contrast an inclusion classroom to a special education classroom (self-contained, resource, low incidence/other disabilities classroom (K-12).   As you compare and contrast these 2 classroom settings in your group discussions, identify how each classroom supports students with disabilities and if there are areas that need improvement.   Even though you will discuss your findings and observations with your group, each group member will write their own three to five page paper that addresses the following topics for each classroom.   1) Introduction: Two classrooms that are to be observed Include classroom type, grade, number of students, types of disabilities seen in the classroom and any environmental descriptors about the classroom. 2) Describe any adaptations and accommodations observed (supports for students with disabilities) 3) Describe any behavior management or techniques observed 4) Personal Impressions/Critique (of methods and practices observed) 5) Observations related to class and readings (Include at least 5 things). Be specific – what specific things did you observe that matched something from the text, discussions, or videos? For example, did you observe a teaching method that you read about in the text? 6) Conclusion: What was learned about different environments/classrooms in special education through observations?

Fullan suggests that successful change initiatives require the leader to understand the dynamics of both the individual and the organization’s capacity to change.  The guidelines for successful change (p. 46-52) provide the leader with 6 key ideas.  Choose three (3) of these ideas.  In your opening paragraph of the paper (which in APA format is the main body of the paper), identify the three you will discuss.  Use subheadings to identify each one.  For each subheading, a) explain the element in your own words, and b) describe a change initiative in which you have been involved that may or may not have utilized any of these ideas in bringing about change. Close the paper with 1-2 paragraphs about what you have concluded about organizational change from your readings and analysis. Be sure to read the rubric before you begin this draft.  Note that both the text and outside references that you will locate and read yourself are required to earn full points.  A doctoral student should begin to look at other sources than a text and this will acquaint you with doing this.  Using the key words of Fullan for the element in a search engine, you choose, use scholarly resources and find others who have argued the same idea or the opposite. In addition to the text, incorporate 4 or more resources you have selected. Suggested page length 3-5 pages, not including the CUC cover sheet, title page, or list of references. APA format and style is required.

For this assignment, you will complete a working copy of Chapter 1 of your dissertation. In Chapter 1, you will provide a strong background and foundation for your study. Essentially, you are making a case for your study, so be clear and liberally use current literature to support your assertions. The more work you put into Chapter 1 now, the less work you will have to do when you enter EDUC 989 with your Chair. INSTRUCTIONS. You will submit an electronic journal of written reflections tied to your readings to help you clarify and define your philosophy and theory of classroom management and assist you in developing and organizing your personal discipline system. You will record and reflect on favorite ideas from the approaches to discipline presented in the text and from other sources. Your reflective journal will also be a means for highlighting issues, viewpoints, and/or online discussions related to your area of expertise. This is not a time to directly answer the thinking questions PROVIDED IN MODULE 4, but rather to synthesize the information provided (cite the text and outside resources using APA).  You must write in paragraphs using appropriate grammar and spelling. Proof-read your work carefully! [guidelines: 200-400 words minimum]  In order to synthesize the information you read, you should talk about the similarities and differences between the “Discipline Authorities” rather than one at a time. What do they have in common? How are they different? How can you apply the thinking in your own classroom? What stands out and why? I am looking for you to dig deep into your soul to change the lives of students! Make sure you “SYNTHESIZE” in your post! (You will lose 2 points on every post if you do not SYNTHESIZE the content you read!!) Assignment #1: Report on Critical issues in literacy – 25 Points, Due week 4  For this assignment, you are going to select a topic related to critical issues in literacy/reading in the elementary classroom. Some examples for issues in literacy are: the use of technology when teaching literacy, growing gaps in literacy skills and differentiate instruction when working with literacy. Read a minimum of five reference sources on the selected topic and write a report following these instructions:  Introduction  Review, summary and analysis (making connection with course content) of the articles’ content?  Conclusion   List of cited references, following APA format (7th ed.).

Question, Quotation, Talking Point Question -As you read the assignment, note the points at which a question come to mind about the methods or conclusions of the research. If it helps, try turning section headings around, putting them in question form. Write a thoughtful question that invites analysis, synthesis, or evaluation of the material, or makes connections between the readings and previous discussion or readings. Quotation -Select a quotation that is especially pertinent or relevant to the main points of the readings. The quotation should be neither too short (1-2 lines) nor too long (10-12 lines). Remember to put the source in parentheses after the quote (who said it, what book or article and what page). Talking Points -Write talking points that show you have thought seriously and critically about the readings. Let me “see inside your head” as you think about, accept, reject, or otherwise engage the reading material. You do not need to answer your question here, but you may talk about it if you wish. Write at least three detailed talking points, covering several different topics from the readings. If there is a library article assigned, include a TP on it.
