COURSE REQUIREMENTS:  – Attendance at all educational seminar and workshop sessions is mandatory for participants.  – A student produced e-learning journal for personal retention.  – Post-seminar examples of classroom integration of workshop-learned instructional techniques, and a     personal reflection paper on the educational seminar outcomes.  – Class participation will be evaluated through the production of each student’s prepared personal      reflections journal, student workshop produced learning tools.  Student Writing Assignment:  The student will complete a five-page reflection paper on concepts presented during a educational seminar that includes describing two concepts or instructional techniques they have implemented in their classroom, and the resulting outcomes on classroom performance. The student will select one outside reading (journal or essay) – and write a four-page analysis of the article’s discussion. Selected article topic should be from the course content.  Course Grading:  Post Seminar Reflection Paper 50%  Research Article Analysis Paper: 50%  Writing Assignment:  Please respond to the following questions/statements in one complete paper. Please be thorough in your discussion. Each part should contain an introduction, main body and a conclusion/summary. Be sure to include a title page, number pages and include course title.  Writing tip:  Be sure to use spell check and grammar check, and have someone proofread your paper before you submit it. (Your paper’s combined responses should be between a minimum of nine pages in length.) Many students find that they need to write more pages to thoroughly cover the content of the writing assignment. That is okay!  Part 1. Post Seminar Reflection Paper. (5 pages)  Part 2. Research: Find two journal articles written by two different authors that are related to the topics in this course.  Then:  (a) compare and contrast the theories (positions) presented in the articles, or  (b) interpret each article and discuss implications for your practice or  (c) write a constructive critique of each author’s conclusion (4 pages)

How is the exponential increase of information that we process in all forms of media affecting the way we live? After reading Nicholas Carr’s The Shallows: What the Internet is Doing to Our Brains and other informational texts on the impact of information technology, write a synthesis essay in which you support a thesis based on one of the following quotes from Carr’s text. Support your position with evidence from the texts. “With the exception of alphabets and number systems, the Net may well be the single most powerful mind-altering technology that has ever come into general use. At the very least, it’s the most powerful that has come along since the book” (Carr 118). “Karp, Friedman, and Davis—all well-educated men with a keenness for writing— seem fairly sanguine about the decay of their faculties for reading and concentrating. All things considered, they say, the benefits they get from using the Net—quick access to loads of information, potent searching and filtering tools, an easy way to share their opinions with a small but interested audience—make up for the loss of their ability to sit still and turn the pages of a book or magazine” (Carr 8). “The price we pay to assume technology’s power is alienation. The toll can be particularly high with our intellectual technologies. The tools of the mind amplify and in turn numb the most intimate, the most human, of our natural capacities—those for reason, perception, memory, emotion” (Carr 211). Use your best voice, academic language, and third person point of view. Incorporate at least three sources (at least one from our class discussions) to support your ideas. Include at least three direct quotes; all quotes and paraphrased information must include a parenthetical citation. The last page of your paper should be your Works Cited page. Follow all MLA guidelines for formatting and documentation. You will also give a three-minute presentation highlighting the main ideas presented in your essay. Your presentation should: include your thesis statement, include at least three main points that support your thesis, include at least three pictures/charts/graphs (some visual representation) of the three main points, and follow all MLA guidelines for formatting and documentation.

The goal of Educational Thought Seminar is to expose you to literature on educational theory that will challenge your perspectives regarding the following topics:       •   diversity and issues of fairness       •   alternative viewpoints and voices in education       •   changing demographics in educational institutions       •   future trends in education       •   personal visions of “what if?”   Select five books from the attached “Reading List.” At least one must be selected from each of the following topic areas:       •   diversity in education       •   alternate viewpoints in education       •   the future of education   Read the second book you selected, and then write an essay. Once you have submitted the essay, schedule a teleconference with an STA1 course mentor to discuss the book. For this course, you will read and discuss five books, and you will need to write essays for three of them. This task will focus on the second of your three essays. REQUIREMENTS Your submission must be your original work. No more than a combined total of 30% of the submission and no more than a 10% match to any one individual source can be directly quoted or closely paraphrased from sources, even if cited correctly. An originality report is provided when you submit your task that can be used as a guide.   You must use the rubric to direct the creation of your submission because it provides detailed criteria that will be used to evaluate your work. You will need at least 3 in class resources and should locate at least two additional resources. PROMPT: Students come to us everyday from a variety of situations including those of trauma and stress. It is the job of the classroom teacher to ensure all students have equal and equitable access to the learning in the classroom. Think about how the learning of students might be impacted when they are coming to us from situations of trauma? Understand that, for many, this trauma has triggered their “flight or fight” hormonal response. Using the course topics, what strategies do we use to override and teach through that response? How do we help students self-regulate and learn in times of stress or trauma based on what we know about how people learn?

They might develop their case on the basis of a PUBLISHED CASE in academic book or journal (e.g. Journal of Cases in Educational Leadership), or one that is available online e.g. those by Harvard-Kennedy School. However, when you are developing the case on the basis of published materials, pleasure ensure that you have fulfilled the following requirements:- You have to adapt the case to make the case understandable in the Chinese cultural context (or the particular cultural context for cases about international schools in the Chinese communities).- You have to acknowledge the source of the original case. tryst# It is highly suggested that you use the concepts and theories that you have learnt extensively (yet appropriately) in parts b and c of your response to allow an informed problem analysis and solving to be performed.

Students will create a flannel board based on a nursery rhyme using oral/aural language and writing experiences to enhance phonological and fluency activities. Choose a nursery rhyme book.   Directions: Students will select an approved nursery rhyme and create flannel board pieces to match the nursery rhyme.

Some argue that online education is equal to or better than traditional in-person education, while others point out its limitations. Using both articles, your own personal experience and cultural observations, argue whether or not online education is as effective as traditional in-person education for college students.

Now it is time for you to reflect on and apply what you have learned in this module. Ruth Nicole Brown (2009) sates, “Although SOLHOT looks to outsiders like a ‘program,’ meaning that we meet for a specific time in a particular space, it is not. Although SOLHOT looks to outsiders like ‘mentoring,’ meaning that we work with Black women and girls, it is not. Although SOLHOT looks to outsiders like ‘girl empowerment,’ meaning that it is a positive gender-specific (or exclusionary) space, it is not (p. 26).” In the quote, she mentions three things SOLHOT is not, it is not a “program”, “mentoring”, or “girl empowerment.”  Brown (2009), goes on to articulate the idea of power not programs, and take a critical stance about youth empowerment as a model of working on youth which often fails youth. Responding to the quote and the reading,  provide a reflection about SOLHOT. – In your reflection: Describe SOLHOT? What is it and why does it exist? Define the concept of power not programs. ECE educators need to be able to assess development all domains. However, language learning is more comprehensive than the others. Using the Language Development Assessment template and the Language Development Traits for Children Birth to 8 Years handout, to create a physical development assessment based on your State Standards for Early Childhood Physical Development. All sections must be thoroughly completed, except measurement since you are not actually performing the assessment.
