3.1 Discussion: Social Factors in Violent Crime Many social factors can contribute to violent crime. Issues of poverty, general economic inequality, and inequality based on ascribed characteristics such as race may all have an impact on the prevalence of violent crime. In 2015, 69.7% of all persons arrested were white and 26.6% were black (FBI, 2016a). African Americans made up 38% of the prison population (Federal Bureau of Prisons, 2016). Social factors such as different opportunities and different legal representation may account for this disproportionate representation. Rural communities have been considered safer from violent crime, but a large metropolitan city may have a higher prevalence of violent crime due to areas of increased poverty. When looking at violent crime statistics, it is important for a forensic psychology professional to look at the social factors that contribute to violent crime. In this Discussion, you analyze the UCR to determine what social and cultural factors might explain the prevalence of violent crime.  To prepare for this Discussion: Review Learning Resources. Locate the UCR data concerning violent crime by race, gender, and population. Select a population (city or county) to analyze data for the Discussion. Provide the name and population demographics (race, gender) of the city or county you selected. Provide the violent crime statistics (prevalence and rate) by race and gender of both the victim and the offender. Explain the socioeconomic factors that may affect the prevalence and rate of violent crime in the population you selected. Explain any cultural norms that may contribute to violent crime. Since 2010, law enforcement agencies in America have been using Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) to locate criminal activity in America. The Fourth Amendment to the Constitution deals with search and seizure issues. Americans are generally protected from unreasonable search and seizure without a search warrant having been issued by a magistrate. Identify how drones are used currently and by which agencies. Discuss how states are reacting to the prospect of using drones to collect evidence. Navigate around the website to learn about Victims’ rights around the country.  Imagine that the fictional state of Bazalia is considering an amendment to its state constitution concerning victim’s rights as follows: “Victims of violent crime, or if such victim is deceased, such victim’s immediate family member, shall have the right of final approval for any plea offer tendered to a defendant when made by a prosecutor who is directly responsible for the criminal prosecution of the matter in which the victim is named. No plea offer shall be tendered absent approval by such victim, or victim’s immediate family, when proper notice has been accomplished.” In a 2 page (minimum) paper, outline your arguments both FOR and AGAINST this amendment. The essay requires a reference page (Outside of the page count). In ‘general’ APA format. It is to spread awareness of the dangers of criminal sympathy. The first body could be about cases where sympathy has been made to criminals that would be categorized as atrocious.  The second body could be how the media goes about it and how it spreads out to other less socially apt individuals. The third body could be about the results of criminal sympathy and it’s the effect on society. Ultimately, how the essay goes about is up to the writer. This is just a guide. The introductory paragraph has been made, and the formatting has been done.
