Teen Pregnancy

Each student will write a paper in which he/she uses his/her critical thinking skills to thoughtfully consider and evaluate a current issue in community health. A list of potential topics is provided at the bottom of this assignment. A student may also suggest a topic of interest to him/her, but must clear the topic with the instructor before starting to write the paper. The paper topic must be different than the topic of his/her PSA group project and different from the topics addressed in the individual and group CTAs. Outside evidence from at least three sources gathered through independent research must be included in the paper. Students must describe the problem at hand, provide multiple perspectives on the issue, draw conclusions from the analysis of the problem/issue and related data/evidence, and be able to identify the implications and/or predict potential consequences of the conclusions. This paper will be graded using the critical thinking rubric that you used to complete individual CTA 1. This rubric is available on our Canvas site. While researching and analyzing, then writing and revising, be sure to ask yourself: Have I identified and summarized the community health problem/issue in such a way that a person reading my paper with no or limited prior knowledge of the problem/issue will understand? In other words, would a person other than a classmate or the course instructor be able to understand your description of the problem/issue? Have I identified and considered multiple perspectives/opinions that are important to the problem/issue? In other words, did you thoughtfully discuss points of view other than your own and those of people who agree with you? Did I provide additional data or evidence from outside sources (minimum of 3)? Did I then evaluate the quality of the supporting data/evidence I used in the paper? In other words, which evidence do you find most persuasive and why? Why do you consider the sources of your data/evidence to be reliable? Did I clearly state a conclusion(s) that I drew from my consideration and evaluation of the problem/issue and the data/evidence I presented throughout my paper? Did I then discuss the potential implications and/or consequences related to the conclusion(s) I drew? In other words, what impact(s) might your conclusions have on the “community” or various “communities” involved with the problem/issue? The paper should be approximately 3 – 5 double-spaced pages in length. The outside sources of information used in the writing of this paper must be cited in the text of the paper and listed as full references at the end (APA or MLA format). Information in quotations will not count towards the final length of the paper. You are encouraged to schedule a consultation with the writing center to get help formatting and writing your paper. Please schedule early as appointments are limited!
