As you consider the introductory chapter of the Hanson text, you should begin to piece together some of the foundational components of this course. One of the main questions we will be exploring is who or what are “the media”? What is the distinction between mass communication and mass media?  What do you think about the Seven Secrets? Find examples of the Seven Secrets from current events/news. Also, how does the Kale article from The Guardian relate to what Hanson tells us about media?

This discussion will allow you to analyze the impact of computer-mediated technologies on your personal and/or academic interactions. Discussion Topics Write a two-paragraph discussion post wherein you do the following: In the first paragraph (100 words), explain how computer-mediated communication (CMC) has affected either your personal or academic relationships in a negative and/or positive way. Give at least two examples to illustrate your point. In the second paragraph (50 words), discuss whether any of the implications played a role in the way CMC has affected those relationships. Write about me better communicated through texting or emailing than person to person, Being able to put down all my thoughts and feelings through this form of communication. Being able to express my opinions better. The downfall to this form of communication is lack of emotion and uncertainty of how it comes across to the receiving end. As a Communication social scientist, you should see things that other people don’t see. Your assignment is to take your Comm skillset and apply it to a real courtroom setting. Normally, you would attend a court case and observe the court setting in-person. Because of COVID, you’ll have to make your observations using streaming. Santa Barbara County courts do not currently have streaming, so find a California court that streams (e.g. https://saccourt.ca.gov/ criminal/hearing-livestreams.aspx) and then watch a court case component (hearing, civil trial, criminal trial etc.) online. There are several options for the Sacramento County Court example, so look around the site a bit (e.g. do calendar searches) before settling in to watch. Several California court streaming links are on our Gauchospace page. Use your knowledge of Communication to assess the patterns that you see, and then think through the likely implications of your observations. For example, does holding a hearing using streaming produce different outcomes than in-person (i.e. what is the impact of CMC vs F2F?); or how do the non-verbal behaviors of actors affect the way that people perceive statements? You may select any characteristics you wish, but the key is to use your knowledge of Comm, and what you learn in this course, to identify the impact of Communication on court cases. The paper should be 8-10 pages long, in APA format.

Your research paper assignment should demonstrate different concepts and the use of social media in the field of emergency management and/or crisis communications. You will go to the websites of MSNBC AND FoxNews. Choose ONE politics or public policy topic that is addressed on both networks websites and read those two stories. In other words, if you select a story about the presidential election on MSNBC then you should try to find how FoxNews is reporting on that same story. Use those two articles to answer the following questions to determine the differences, if any, between the way the media report. Is the media trying to influence your opinion about the topic as mentioned in the textbook under the heading “media influence?” (The bulk of your paper should answer this question.) Again, provide examples.  4. Are the media in this particular instance performing their proper role in our democracy? Why or why not? Explain what that role is. This should come from your textbook. 5. Finally, go to the following fact checking resources: Politifact and Factcheck. Both of these resources are non-partisan and independent fact checking organizations that help us determine what is fact and fiction in American politics. Check out both of their “about us” sections so you can determine for yourself if you think they are a legitimate source of information or not. Then use these websites to determine if the facts reported in your story were true and discuss. You may not be able to find the exact story from MSNBC or Fox, but hopefully you can find something that is closely related to discuss. The whole point is to become familiar with these sites so you can use them in the future. 5. Copy and paste URL of your news stories from MSNBC and Fox at the bottom of your paper • This paper may be longer than 1 page (no more than 2 pages)
