PubMed is an online database for biochemistry and molecular biology literature searching. Then click on the colored rectangle (dialog box) and enter the key words or author (last name followed by initials, no punctuation) for your search. Then click on Search. You can click on Related Papers to see additional references. Internet access can be obtained at various places at York College; ask at the library or see your instructor. A variety of primary source journals should be consulted, including Nature, Science, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Molecular and Cellular Biology, Cell, Nucleic Acids Research, Journal of Molecular Biology and The Journal of Biological Chemistry. We have some of these journals in the York College library. Besides, York College subscribes to a literature service such as Science Direct, and additional papers that are not included in the online collection can be obtained electronically through Interlibrary Loan. Look through the shelf copy of each of these journals weekly and bring interesting topics and titles to class. The easiest way to research a term paper is to start with a recent primary source or review article (key paper) on your chosen topic. Then, turn to the reference section of the key paper every time you read an important bit of information with a text reference citation. Include these references in your notes and state what they are about. Follow up by collecting, reading and annotating the relevant references. You will have circumscribed a body of primary source information when you see the same references appearing over and over again. Then you should be ready to write your term paper based on your notes. Every paper needs a focus, which should emerge from your literature survey although you may not know what it is when you start. Focus also means that you should provide depth based on closely reading several solid research articles. Depth is more important than breadth. Avoid general topics like “prospects for gene therapy”; instead, zero in on a specific topic such as “Recent progress and prospects for treatment of Duchene’s Muscular Dystrophy by gene therapy”. The paper should be shaped like a funnel. Start with a broad summary and quickly bring the paper to a narrow focus. Google Scholar is another useful source for references. It has a user-friendly dialog window where you can type in key words, author names, etc. The articles come up with the number of times they’ve been cited since publication, and the papers that cited a key reference can be useful for updating a research topic. One of the most useful features is ‘Cite’, which allows you to copy the reference and paste it into your reference section. Use APA style. Referencing in a Term Paper. Your term paper needs text reference citations and a reference section. A text reference citation should appear every time you cite published non-textbook information. Don’t quote; paraphrase and reference! The format for a text reference citation is last name only (author, year), (author and author, year) or (author et al., year), depending on number of authors (one, two, three or more). One acceptable format for a reference in the reference section is: First author (last name, first initial), later authors (first initial, last name). Year. Title. Journal. Volume: First page – last page. You will encounter variations, but this one is both readable and informative. The title should be included because it tells you and other readers what the cited work is about. Headings in a term paper. Your term paper should be subdivided by a title, headings and subheadings, much like a journal article. But because it is a library research paper, not a laboratory research paper, the headings would not be Methods, Results and Discussion. There is currently a race to develop a COVID vaccine but once one is approved, who will actually get it? My thoughts are that vaccines are extremely helpful and powerful medical tools to help combat certain diseases. In fact, they can even eradicate some diseases altogether, like smallpox. However, as with most modern medicine, there are some negative side effects that they carry with them. The most common side effects tend to be very mild like pain or swelling at the injection site. In my opinion, the good that vaccines can provide outweighs the bad. Vaccines make it possible to protect children from 14 diseases by age two (CDC). Some parents argue that it isn’t necessary to vaccinate their children from mild diseases. However, while chickenpox may seem like a “mild disease”, “before the vaccine was available, about 50 children died every year from [it], and about 1 in 500 children who got chickenpox was hospitalized” (CDC). Some parents are hesitant to vaccinate their children because they believe that there’s a link to autism. However, numerous studies have shown that this is not the case. In particular, people fear that an ingredient in vaccines called thimerosal, which is a mercury-based preservative used to prevent contamination of vaccine vials, has a direct link to autism. Since 2003 there have been 9 CDC studies showing that there is no link between this ingredient and autism spectrum disorders (CDC). Although there is no proven link, thimerosal has been removed or reduced to trace amounts in childhood vaccines. It is currently only used in flu vaccines that are stored in multidose vials. One reason why many people believe in this myth is because early signs of autism and other developmental diseases first start appearing as a child is receiving most of their vaccinations (around 12 to 18-months). Many parents cling to the idea that since the “vaccine precedes the event, the vaccine causes disease” so it’s more comforting than the idea that their child had autism all along (Davidson, 2017). Overall, vaccines are an extremely valuable medical advancement that we would be remiss to doubt or overlook.

For your final project this summer, you need to get outside and find some stuff. I watched a TED Talk last year that changed the way I think about nature and wild spaces. Ordinarily, when we think of the wild what comes to mind? Pristine natural areas, unspoiled by human activity? The speaker explained that, with climate change in mind, there really are no places left on the globe that are unaffected by people. Furthermore, places we often ignore or overlook can be full of living things. Places like weedy lots are great places to find interesting things but we tend to devalue those things because, they’re small, they’re not native to our area, or they don’t have much economic or aesthetic appeal. Since no habitats are pristine anymore, we should learn to accept and appreciate the weedy lots around our neighborhoods for the abundance of life they contain. So here’s what I want you to do: Take a walk. Around your yard, down the street, to a nearby park, it doesn’t matter. Hell, go all the way to Yellowstone National Park. Just find some place that is likely to contain abundant plant and animal life. And take your phone with you. While you’re out and about, take pictures of whatever living things you find. That includes plants, animals, fungi, whatever. The only restriction is that I’d prefer you take pictures of things that are growing on their own. That means don’t take pictures of the vegetables in your garden or the flowers in front of your building, take pictures of the weeds instead. Don’t take pictures of your pets, but you can take pictures of the stray cat that comes by every evening. Upload your photos to the website iNaturalist.org. If you already have a Google, Facebook, Twitter, Yahoo, or Flicker account, you can sign in through those and you don’t even need to create a new account. iNaturalist uses machine learning to automatically suggest possible identifications for the organisms in your photos. Once they are uploaded, human users are able to either confirm the computer’s suggestion or make their own suggestions. I use iNaturalist every day when I take pictures of insects for my Instagram account. It’s a lot of fun to use. Go online and do some research about the organisms that you found. Find out what their geographic ranges are, what habitats they prefer, what they eat, if they are generalists or specialists, what their current populations are, if they face any particular challenges, or any other interesting or noteworthy information. Create a field guide of the organisms you have found. A field guide is a book that contains pictures and information about a certain group of organisms, birds, or butterflies, or trees for example. Your guides will run the gamut of all types of organisms. Each entry should include your photo, the name of the organism, & the information you gathered about it. Your guides should contain at least 25 entries. Upload the completed guide here as a .pdf or .doc(x) file. I’m looking at you, Mac users. I might not be able to view your work if you use other file types. To summarize, go outside and photograph at least 25 different organisms of any sort, as long as they are not captive (like pets) or purposely cultivated (like plants in a garden). Identify the organisms you photographed using iNaturalist. Do some research about the natural history of your organisms. Compile that information into a mini-field guide. Upload your field guide to Blackboard as a .pdf or .doc(x) file. You will be graded on the quantity of organisms you find, the diversity of those organisms, the completeness of the natural history information, and the aesthetic qualities of your guide.
