1. Develop a small sculpture that is a minimum of eight inches tall, by four inches wide. please use found materials and supplies from your home or another accessible location to create a modified object. The difference mediums that you choose should be manufactured objects or materials. you are welcome to include any material that you wish. submit at least two photographs accompanied by a 1-2 paragraph write up describing the form and content of your piece. 2. Develop a work of art with natural, organic materials. This may include any sort of found material in nnature such as dirt, rocks, sticks, water, earth pigments, or any sort of naturally occurring material. your work of art should be at least one foot square, and a height of your choice. submit at least two photographs accomplished by a 1-2 paragraph write up describing the form and content of your piece.

Looking at the image Barbershop by Jacob Lawrence. It is such a great piece to learn how to analyze or break down the visual components of the work. To formally analyze a work of art will help you appreciate the work at a deeper level. Getting some background information can help you gain more insight into the work but it is not necessary to do the analysis of the formal composition. The first thing to do is take in the overall image and then, literally describe in detail to yourself what you see… What’s the subject matter? what colors do you see, how do you respond to the shapes or what elements are repeated, etc…The description will inform your process of analyzing the work. There are four IMPORTANT types of lines that are present within this work. List what they are and give specific examples from the work for each type to support your answers. The artist depicted spatial depth using various techniques. List three ways spatial depth is depicted and give a specific example from the artwork for each technique to support your answers. The texture is implied in the work. Explain how the texture is implied by giving 2 specific examples from the work to clarify your answers. What color scheme do you see within the work? Please give specific examples from the artwork to support your answers. The principle of contrast is present within the work. Please give specific examples from the artwork to show 2 different ways contrast is present and explain the impact. What type of unity is present? How it is created? What kind of balance does the work have and how is it created? How is the main focal point created? Are there other areas of emphasis? There are many patterns within the work due to the different elements that are repeated to create a specific pattern within the work? What kind of rhythm is created from this?

Answer the following: – Why is The Maltese Falcon (1941) an important film noir? – How closely does Huston’s 1941 film version follow the novel? There is one chapter in the novel that Huston did not film. Which one? Tell the story told in this “unfilmed” chapter. Discuss main characters and the plot. – And consider this: Why does Spade “give up” Brigid O’Shaughnessy at the end? Discuss the end of the film and Spade’s motivations. – And quote from Schrader on the “hard-boiled” school and The Maltese Falcon’s place in noir history. Take a single, blank sheet of Letter sized (or A4) paper, and transform it so that it operates according to the properties of new media art and systems aesthetics we learned. Perhaps, you could use the paper as an example of an input/output feedback system. What you do to the paper is not restricted to writing or drawing: you may fax it, print on it, clone it, burn it, fold it, crumple it, measure it, stick things on it, cut it, atomically deconstruct it, post it, place it, exhibit it, anything that you like. For the submission, you need to document your project in any media (photo, sound, video) and submit the documentation with a description of your process (350 words max). Create an interesting feedback loop which emulates, rather than simulates, life around us. If you still feel confused about the concept, read Jack Burnham’s Systems Aesthetics (1974), go over the lecture notes on “Manovich’s New media properties,” and reference some 20th century scientific influences (e.g. Ludwig von Bertalanffy, Norbert Wiener) Also, examples of early systems art will be helpful. Address the following questions: How is your artwork an ‘open system’ so that the artwork can change and evolve differently over time? What type of interaction happens between the spectator, the artist(i.e. you), the artwork and its surroundings? How do you emphasize the process of art-making over the art object? How does this artwork engage a critical and meaningful dialogue with our surroundings? What type of documentation ( photo, sound, video, blog, etc.) is appropriate to support your artwork? Through this project you will research and explore an Eastern theatre tradition from its origin through its evolution to today. You will document its history, analyze a performance for the Parts of a Play and provide a personal reflection on the artform. OBJECTIVES 1.Explore the rise and evolution of eastern theatre traditions 2.Analyze the parts of a play for a performance of Eastern Theatre 3.Compare and contrast Eastern and Western theatre traditions You must also include a bibliography in MLA format citing your sources of research and the video of the performance you watched.
