Contextual Analysis

You will be expected to independently select two photographs not discussed in this course. You will have to make a contextual connection between the two works. Choose two works focussing on the same subject. For example, you can choose the representation of the female body, cityscape, landscape, still-life, nature. How are they different in style? How is the representation of the female body different in the two examples? What does one tell us about a landscape that the other contradicts? Why? In choosing your two works of art make sure to focus on a subject that is central to your current interest in your practice The Final Paper must be structured in the following way: 1) Introduction 2) Part one: formal analysis 3) Part two: contextual analysis Part 1:  Systematically and exhaustively analyze your chosen works of art considering the following (4 pages): Composition Colors Lines Perspective/Flatness Technique Materiality   Part 2:  Compare the two works you have chosen from a contextual perspective (4 pages): What do these works say about the subject they represent? How do they say what they say in different ways? Do they complement each other? Does one add to what the other says? ESSAY STRUCTURE First of all, take some time to think about a subject that interests you and that you want to know more about. Then choose two works not discussed in this course. It is important that the two photographs share something. Ideally, they should share the same topic and look very different or be from different movements but share some similarities. Be smart in your choice–this carries more points! Think about your selection carefully, so that the comparison is interesting! The overall length of this assignment is 8 pages excluding the bibliography, your name and title, and images. Please write the paper first and then add the images to make sure you don’t get the total page number mixed up. Marks are detracted if you submit a paper shorter than 8 or exceeding 10 pages. The essay must be spaced at 1.5pt, the font must 12pts, ‘Arial’. INTRODUCTION The introduction should not take more than one page. Keep bio info to a minimum, 4 lines for both artists, and focus on explaining why you have chosen these works of art–what do they share, how are they similar? MAIN BODY This is where you have to showcase your analytical skills–overall length 3/4 pages. This is your analysis. Make it interesting and relevant. You have two options:  1) Analyze all the points listed above one by one in one work of art and then separately do the same for the other. 2) Use each point to analyze both works of art at the same time: ex: analyze the composition in both, then move on to colors in both and so on. This is more difficult than option 1 and will carry more points. 3) Contextual analysis  CONCLUSION Wrap up your essay with some smart considerations about the two photographs you have analyzed. Which is the one you find more interesting and why? How do the formal quality of the artwork impact or convey meaning?  The overall length of the conclusion should not be more than 1page.  Your essay must comply with generic academic prescriptions such as footnoting, referencing, and bibliography. You should not use more than 2 Internet sources and should include at least a minimum of 5 different sources. Images must be included and labeled accordingly, specifying the artist’s name, the title of work, materials, and year of execution. The bibliography must be alphabetically ordered by surname. You are expected to use referencing correctly. Every time you read information somewhere in order to write your work it is important to reference the source–otherwise, you’ll be committing plagiarism.

Native Populations

I need a scholarly article discussing the native populations in/around the Amur river basin and today’s Sino-Russian Border in the East. 1st Reference to consult is “Beyond the Steppe Frontier: A history of the Sino-Russian Border” by Soren Urbansky.  How were the populations integrated into the national identities and societies we see today.  How did the Russian cossacks interact with these populations during Russian expansion?  How did the Chinese/Qing interact with these populations historically before the arrival of the Russians?  How did the Russians see these populations following establishing borders with the Qing? Feel free to organize it how you see fit. Ultimately I’m interested in a paper discussing  1- The living situation of these groups, and their cultural ethnic identities. 2- How the Qing treated them prior to the arrival of the Russians 2- How Russian Imperialism sought to integrate, employ, or displace them into the empire during the expansion period. 3- How Sino-Russian wars resulting in the treaty of Nerchinksk and Peking altered the border and affected the populations therein.  4- What is the demographic makeup of The Primorsky Krai and Khabarovsk Krai today? What happened to those populations?

Classical Period

For this wrap-up we’re going to do a close-listening to a piece of music and consider how it responds to broader themes in our course. Please listen to the “Dies Irae” of Mozart’s Requiem.  Then read this article from France Musiques. Then write a 250-word response that addresses the concept of composition in the Classical Period. If, as we know, Mozart didn’t complete this piece, but it was instead a posthumous collaboratively completed work, why do historians and audiences adhere to an auteur theory around this piece? What is it in the sound of this piece, in the history of the mass, or in the legend of Mozart that allows a legend like this to persist? Please consider some of the reading and discussions we’ve already had, as well as perhaps doing a little reading on the history of the Requiem mass, and the Dies Irae specifically.

Critical Black Memory

Use Leigh Raiford’s essay, (The attached reading) answer the questions, below. This essay is fairly long and a bit theoretical, I suggest that you first skim/spot read the first sections in order to get a sense of her aims, as well as the history of lynching images; then, focus your reading on sections III (3) – V (5). Your answers to the prompts should be 1-2 pages, single-spaced. Raiford writes of photography in relation to “the burden of memory” as well as “critical black memory.”  What does she mean by the latter?  Does Raiford believe that Emory Douglas, and/or Kerry James Marshall, and/or Ken Gonzales-Day provide examples of critical black memory? Explain, referring to their works as well as her argument about them.  Length: 1-2 pages, single-spaced.

Systematic Exploration

Required Resources Read/review the following resources for this activity: Textbook: Chapter 1-16 Minimum of 4 outside scholarly sources in addition to the textbook/lesson One personal interview of another adult of your choosing Introduction As you learned in Week 3, for your Socioautobiography Narrated PowerPoint assignment, there is a strong tradition of creating both sociologically-informed biographies and sociologically-informed autobiographies in the discipline of sociology. The socioautobiography is a “disciplined, systematic exploration of one’s life from a sociological point of view” (Hill, 2009, p. 3). Also, the sociobiography is the systematic exploration of another person’s life from a sociological point of view. For this assignment, you will be building upon the work you began in your Week 3 Socioautobiography Narrated PowerPoint. For this week’s assignment, you will interview an adult person of your choosing and complete a sociobiography of that person, and present that in a narrated PowerPoint. You will also compare and contrast that person’s sociological characteristics with your own. To begin this assignment, consider the sociological concepts you focused on for your Week 3 assignment about yourself and consider what sociological concepts you would like to compare and contrast with the person you interview. Link: Questions to Consider  Reflect Just as you did for your Week 3 assignment, and now, as you create questions to ask the person you interview, consider the following questions for potential use in your interview: How might a sociologist introduce you? How have social influences shaped you? What were the social forces that constructed your life or lifestyle? How have you negotiated the crisscrossing pressures of autonomy and conformity? Who are you in social context and what does it mean to understand your life using the “sociological imagination,” or utilizing a sociological perspective? What sociological concepts would be most helpful in understanding and interpreting your life experiences, whether class, or reference group, conformity, agents of socialization, gender socialization, racial socialization, norms, roles, significant others, total institutions (particularly if you were in the military), achieved status, ascribed status, deviance, subculture, culture, culture shock, ethnocentrism, folkways, mores, peer groups, and any others described in the textbook chapters, to interpret your life experiences? What events, moments or relationships in your life have impacted you significantly? Interview Locate an adult willing to be interviewed about their life story. The person can be any adult you choose, whether in your family or outside your family. Be sure to inform that person that you will be writing up your observations from the interview in a presentation for your Society and Culture course. Present In a narrated PowerPoint, compare and contrast your sociological observations about yourself that you shared in your Week 3 assignment with your sociological observations of the person you interview. Address the following 2 important sections: Explore the interconnections between the life story of a person you interview and the larger social structure or culture. Compare and contrast the sociological themes and concepts related to your own personal story with the sociological themes and concepts related to the story of the person you interviewed. Apply the sociological imagination in the analysis. Include the following in your analysis: Quotes or paraphrases and citations from 4 outside scholarly sources and assigned readings (online Lessons or textbook readings), to support your observations in your presentation. 6 different concepts, keywords, or vocabulary words from Chapters 1-16 in your analysis and observations on your slides, formatted in boldface and underlined on slides. You may repeat these 6 terms throughout the PowerPoint presentation if you want to, but you are not required to. Link: Writing Tip Writing Tip: Focus As Kanagy and Kraybill (1999) wrote in their book, The Riddles of Human Society, the socioautobiography is “not a diary” or a “point-by-point account” of life since birth (p. 287), and, similarly, the sociobiography for this week’s assignment is not a “point-by-point account” since birth of the person you interview, either. Feel free to focus on only a part or parts of your life story and of that of the person you interview. Instructions For this comparative case study project, you are required to create a narrated presentation. The audio/video must be part of the PowerPoint file. Audio/video may not be external to the presentation and you must submit a .ppt file extension PowerPoint file. The presentation must include the following: Part or Parts of the Life Story of the Person You Interview: Explain and analyze the life story of the person you interview, or parts of the life story of the person you interview, as a sociologist might, examining sociological categories relevant to that person’s life story. Include details of family, culture, and background. Consider what types of categories a sociologist might use to describe the person. Comparison and/or Contrast of the life story of the person you interview with your own life story that you presented in your Week 3 assignment Audio Narration: Allow the audio narration to serve as the main explanation of the presentation. Do not use blocks of text on slides. If you want to add additional written explanations, in addition to the audio narration, you may add that in presentation notes for slides. Engagement: Be sure to deliver the presentation in a professional and engaging manner. Visual Aids: DO NOT include a photo of the person you interview, to maintain confidentiality of the person you interview, but images or symbols as visual aids should still be included. Include photos or symbols that represent the sociological concepts you are analyzing in your presentation. You may include a photo of yourself, if you wish, in your comparison. If you use any images from the Internet or from any sources other than your own personal photographs, you must include citations for those and those citations are *not* part of your required 4 outside scholarly sources plus the online Lesson or textbook. Key Words in Bold and Underlined: Be sure to include 6 different concepts, key words, or vocabulary words from Chapters 1-16 in your analysis and observations on your slides, formatted in boldface and underlinedon slides Visual Appeal and Organization: Do not include slides with large blocks of text. Use bullet points, brief text, and clear organization to create an organized and visually appealing presentation. Citations:Include parenthetical in-text citations in the slide presentation citing at least 4 outside scholarly sources and assigned textbook/lesson reading to support observations made in the presentation. Remember, cite sources for all images, too, that are not your personal photographs and those sources do *not* count as part of your 4 required outside scholarly sources plus the textbook/lesson. Presentation Requirements (APA format) Narration Length: 5 to 10 minutes (you will miss credit if the presentation is too short or too long, so adhere closely to presentation length requirements) Slide Length: 8 slides (not including title slide and references slide) APA-style parenthetical in-text citations on slides for a minimum of 4 outside sources plus the textbook/lesson Title Slide At least one Comparison/Contrast Slide; though you are welcome to include more than one slide comparing and contrasting your life story characteristics with those of the person you interview References slide (minimum of 4 outside scholarly sources in addition to the textbook/lesson) Link for textbook: https://www.amazon.com/Sociology-Our-Times-Diana-Kendall/dp/1337109657
