Paper: Culture Bound Syndromes   Mental illness is also culturally relative and is expressed differently in different regions of the world.  A culture bound syndrome is a collection of signs and symptoms restricted to a particular culture or region and may occur as a result to the social pressures of a particular culture. Culture-specific syndrome, or folk illness,  are a  combination of psychiatric and somatic symptoms that are considered to be a recognizable disease only within that specific society or culture. The rate of an illness also varies. For example, some mental illness disorders are more prevalent in women, like Latah, while other disorders like Koro are more prevalent in men. These disorders used to be called “exotic psychotic disorders”, until we realized that here in the United States, we have culture bound syndromes just like the rest of the world. Anorexia and bulimia found predominantly in women of Western European countries are media driven mental diseases. For this assignment, research a culture bound syndrome and write a 1-page paper that discusses why this particular illness is found in a region, the rate of the illness, and what traditional treatments are used to cure it. Foraging is the main source of livelihood for !Kung people in Southern Africa of Angola. Since they’re so dependant on nature, they live in a very uncertain world. Another consequence is the food and nutrients of the babies are being compromised and there is no permanent settlement or drilling because they haunt where games are abundant and forage to the area where there is food. Thesis- The !Kung people’s belief system is also based on their lifestyle, especially as hunters, gathers, and all foragers. The topic I choose for this paper was the way religion plays into gender construct and norms. My professor mentioned to focus my paper around a question such as: “Why did Christian Europe begin to devalue the role of women in society during the early modern era?” or the topic of Amy Coney Barrett, who is a devout Catholic, as well as a high achieving women ascending to one of the most powerful position in the country (a Supreme Court justice) and what her religious views could mean for women’s rights.  In this paper I must discuss existing literature which pertains to the topic, as well as present my own ideas and feelings regarding the subject matter.
