Identify your Research Problem Fall’s continue to have a significant prevalence within the scope of nursing practice. Many patients that are inpatient suffer from falls, increasing morbidity and mortality rates, slowing recovery resulting in a financial burden, and lowering therapeutic success. This financial burden is not only to the cost of the health provider who could spend this money elsewhere, should the fall be prevented, but also lands heavily on the patient. Those patients more likely to fall, are of elderly age, or already have comorbidities, which usually means their capacity to work is also lesser. The impact can be crippling, especially when you factor in that their quality of life will continue to decrease as the result of a fall and the length of their recovery will be prolonged, reducing their potential to return to normal daily activities. When you then consider that many emergency calls and admissions are also as a result of home and community care falls as well, the scope widens. Nurses need to become health educators, in addition to their role as a health advocate for their patients, and proactively assess and implement to reduce incidence. Whereas in many disorders such as sepsis, we have a wide range of bundles for a specified target patient group; that’s not so much the case in falls. A bundle would allow multiple aspects of fall prevention to be covered by a nurse overviewing a patient, as a default standard and is replicable across a wide scope as is needed in this situation. My organization, like many nursing organizations, is a firm believer in evidence-based practice, and this is distinguished in many of its activities. Evidence-based practice (EBP) competencies are essential for all practicing healthcare professionals to provide evidence-based, quality care, and improved patient outcomes (Saunders, Gallagher?Ford, Kvist, & Vehviläinen?Julkunen 2019). Whether that be from the superficial perspective of guidelines that are implemented in our clinical practice day-to-day, or the clinical governance and auditing that we’re encouraged to partake in. Recently my organization has had some great ‘link’ nurses involved in my clinical area, who help bridge the gap of knowledge and provide up to date guidelines and research knowledge on our practices in areas not so common. This has created an environment where we can openly discuss recent journal articles that could affect how we nurse our patients, including a monthly journal club and a roster for poster presentations. I feel as though my work environment has high research-based culture and ethics; this may be as a consequence of being a small facility. I think that organizations should conduct all of our current practices, in addition to any new and innovative ways of getting research into clinical practice. We know that translating research into clinical practice can be challenging, but one suggestion is that this translation should be in the design of any study being developed(Curtis, K., Fry, M., Shaban, R. Z., & Considine, J. 2017). With that in mind, while we could improve and advocate for better translation in future research, I feel that the way my organization uses research positively impacts my nursing practice.
