Anxiety Disorder

1. Define this mental illness and describe briefly its existence in these countries. 2. What cosmologies, cultural ideas and imagery are brought to interpretations of this mental ill- ness within these particular communities? 3. What are the current treatment systems for dealing with this mental illness in these two contexts? 4. What contribution could (or have) anthropological methods (e.g. case studies, ethnography, long-term fieldwork, participant-observation) make to understandings and treatments of this men- tal state/illness? In what ways do they add to/unsettle understandings derived from the biomed- ical psychiatry model? 5. Having critically examined the current medical treatment/cultural response to this ‘illness’, what do you see as a productive, effective, and useful way to approach its treatment in order to im- prove the lives of those suffering? Draw on at least FOUR credible secondary sources. At least two of these sources must adopt an ethnographic (anthropological) approach to understanding this issue.
