Over a period of 2-3 days, choose a specific news subject (e.g. an event, public figure, etc) and study its coverage in the New York Times, USA Today and Providence Journal. Compare and contrast their approaches to covering the subject, and how that coverage evolves over the 2-3 days you are analyzing. Need help choosing a subject? Start with one of the news outlets and look at their front page choose one story and find stories on the same subject in the other news outlets. Good examples this week: Covid-19 pandemic; 2020 Presidential election; nationwide protests Write a 1-2 page reflection paper including these elements: 1. Description. Count the total number of stories in each paper related to your subject. What are the specific topics of these stories? 2. Analysis. Using your notes as a guide, discuss what patterns emerge in these stories. What kinds of stories appear most frequently? Which news outlets focus of which types of story? Note 3 intriguing patterns you noticed. 3. Interpretation. What does your analysis mean? Why do some subjects appear more frequently than others? Why do certain types of stories seem to get featured? 4. Evaluation. Discuss the limitations of your study. Which paper seems to do the best job covering the subject? Why? 5. Engagement. What would you suggest to the editor of your local paper (Providence Journal) to help improve their coverage of this subject?
