In this essay, you will explore the formation of your self-concept and how it influences your communication with others. Read chapter two in the Understanding Human Communication textbook, The Self, Perception and Communication. Pay attention to the following concepts: external influence on self-concept, self-fulfilling prophecy and communication and identity management. While reading these sections, identify personal or real life examples that you can integrate into your essay. Instructions Begin by making a list of the skills, abilities, interests, beliefs and roles that compose your self- concept. From this list, determine three adjectives that most accurately reflect who you think you are most of the time. (examples: self-motivated, energetic, thoughtful, practical, eclectic, eccentric, industrious, independent, etc.). Use this information to compose an introduction for the essay. Make sure to conclude your introduction with a thesis sentence. Use items 2-4 to compose the body of the essay. 2. Explain who or what influenced aspects of your self-concept. Did you pick this up from your parents, a role model, or a celebrity? Did something happen to influence your personality or behaviors? Apply communication theories such as reflected appraisal and/or self-fulfilling prophecy to explain how you perceive yourself (as discussed in chapter 2).
