Term Discernment

Essay 3: Term Discernment       Identify a pair of terms often confused with each other and used interchangeably, explain the distinction between the terms, and  show why that distinction is socially significant. Support your argument with  specific examples  of the terms being confused and  the significant effects of the confusion. Also incorporate into your argument two outside sources, at least one of which must be  scholarly. Thomas Sowell’s distinguishing between  wisdom  and  intellect  in the first two chapters of  Intellectuals and Society  and  George Will’s “Forget Values, Let’s Talk Virtues” ( http://www.jewishworldreview.com/cols/will052500.asp ) are two useful  models for this option.      Following is a partial list of pairs to help get you started: freedom/liberty, equality of opportunity/equality of outcome,  equality/equity, nice/kind, disagreement/hate, confidence/arrogance, commitment/obsession, compassion/pity, greed/success,  confusion/profundity…      Minimum Length Requirement:  900 words (roughly three pages, double-spaced with one-inch margin
