Geriatric Syndrome
Choose an older adult (65 years of age or older) to complete this assignment. This can be a family member, a neighbor, or someone at your church, etc. Do not use the name of the older adult in your paper. Remember that confidentiality must be maintained. Perform the Fulmer SPICES assessment on this older adult. Describe your findings in the body of your paper. Choose one of the six geriatric syndromes identified in this assignment. chose one of the following : sleep disruption, problems with eating and feeding, incontinenc, confusion, evidence of falls, skin break dow.n Research your chosen geriatric syndrome. You must use at least three (3) sources that will be cited in your paper, using 7th ed. APA format and references on the reference page. Sources must be within the past five years. The campus librarians are very helpful in assisting students with searches for accurate sources. Do not use Wikipedia. Also, be careful with .com sites because they may not be credible. It is best to look for sites that have a .gov or .edu suffix and peer-reviewed journal articles that are found in the CCBC library databases. Discuss why you chose this geriatric syndrome for your older adult (rationale for your choice based on your knowledge of the ACES framework, physiological aging changes, and EBP geriatric nursing care). Describe how normal aging changes could affect this geriatric syndrome. How can the nurse intervene to reduce the impact of this geriatric syndrome in your older adult? Write a three (3) to four (4) page paper, not including the title or reference page. Double space the type, use 12 font Times Roman, and one (1) inch margins. The format of your paper should be as follows: a. An introductory paragraph, describing your patient and why you chose this older adult for this paper. b. A paragraph describing the results of your SPICES assessment of your older adult. Indicate whether any areas were difficult to assess and why. c. A least 2-3 paragraphs discussing in-depth one of the six geriatric syndromes listed above that you chose. Please include your rationale for selecting this geriatric syndrome for this particular older adult. These paragraphs should explain how your chosen geriatric syndrome affects the older adults: i. Quality of life. ii. Functional level. iii. Ability to socialize. d. A paragraph or two should include Utilizing evidence-based sources by discussing: i. Nursing interventions that could be utilized for this older adult. ii. Whether these interventions could potentially reduce the impact of the geriatric syndrome on this older adult. iii. Additional resources for addressing this syndrome which might be helpful in your nursing plan of care for this older adult. e. Lastly, include a reflective paragraph that explains how you will utilize the tenets of this paper in your future nursing practice. f. Use proper grammar, spelling, and formatting. g. Refer to the grading rubric to ensure obtaining maximum points on your paper. h. Turn in your paper with the grading rubric and Fulmer Spices Tool. This tool must be completed in detail. Where it says evidence, there needs to be enough evidence of appropriate history and assessment questions that clearly indicates the presence or absence of the syndrome.
