At Risk Population other than African American
Getting Started DuBois & Miley (2014) define at-risk populations as clients who are vulnerable to specific problems, although such problems have yet to surface. In other words, identifiable conditions exist that could have a negative impact on social functioning (p. 65). Categories of at-risk populations you might be familiar with are the unemployed, the chronically ill, and the abused or neglected. We hear about these issues in the daily news. What we dont hear about is all the work that social work agencies do to prevent problems or at least prevent them from worsening. Upon successful completion of this assignment, you will be able to: Demonstrate critical thinking. Practice reflection and self-regulation to manage personal values and maintain professionalism in practice situations. Resources Textbook: Social Work: An Empowering Profession Instructions Review the rubric to make sure you understand the criteria for earning your grade. Write a comprehensive six- to eight page paper about an at-risk population that you would like to learn about. You cannot be a member of this population. At the end of your paper, do some self-reflection regarding your personal exposure to this population. You may use first person for that portion of the paper. Follow the American Psychological Association (APA) style of writing. Your References page must include at least five sources from professional journals. Respond to the following prompts in constructing your research paper: Introduce your population by providing statistics and facts. What do we know about this population? How may person-in-environment factors, such as family, location, economics, social trends, resources, or life chances, have an impact on shaping life experiences and contributing to the aforementioned statistical picture? Discuss the ways that the dominant culture surrounding this population may have oppressed, marginalized, or alienated the population or created or enhanced its own privilege and power. Connect oppression and privilege to the issues identified in your research. How have you personally or professionally been exposed to this population? What biases or misinformation do you have about working with this population? Where do these biases come from, and how can you manage them effectively? What do you think you still need to know or would like to know about this population? When you have completed your assignment, save a copy for yourself and submit a copy to your instructor using the Dropbox by the end of the workshop.
