Spanking has had a controversial history as an element of effective child-rearing. Some Scandinavian cultures have found the practice so abhorrent that it has been outlawed as a form of parental discipline. On the other hand, some private schools and many parents believe it is an effective, socially acceptable, parental choice practice for shaping a childs behavior.
What are the merits of spanking and the potential consequences it holds for a developing childs future behavior? Given what we know about modeling and social learning, is spanking simply another source of information about aggressive behavior? Given what we know about the effectiveness of punishment versus reinforcement, how does spanking change behavior in the long term and short term?
Should this simply be a parental decision, or should there be legislation governing this activity? In particular, does spanking lead children to become more violent?

Childrens development of the cognitive and social skills needed for later success in school may be best supported by a parenting style known as responsive parenting.1 Responsiveness is an aspect of supportive parenting described across different theories and research frameworks (e.g. attachment, socio-cultural) as playing an important role in providing a strong foundation for children to develop optimally.2-4 Parenting that provides positive affection and high levels of warmth and is responsive in ways that are contingently linked to a young childs signals (contingent responsiveness) are the affective-emotional aspects of a responsive style.5 These aspects, in combination with behaviours that are cognitively responsive to the childs needs, including the provision of rich verbal input and maintaining and expanding on the childs interests, provide the range of support necessary for multiple aspects of a childs learning.6
