However, if your motives arise from egotistical impulses, then it is unethical. Rebore mentions, “western civilization has a long history of glorifying individualism that neglects the social aspects of individual action and omissions.” In conclusion, I think that career advancement is a matter of commutative justice where you must consider the actor and the individuals it will affect. Philosophers of the past influence contemporary ethical opinion through the previous writings being the foundation on which we arrive at what is considered legal and ethical. These writings are the beginning of a collective agreement on standards, forming the base of contemporary ethical opinion that holds what was once the established order.
