Consider the demonstration problem 6.3 which uses a normal distribution to determine the probability associated with generating between 3.6 and 5 pounds of waste per year.

Discuss any one of the following concepts associated with this problem.

1. What are the “clues” that the problem can be solved with the use of the normal distribution?
2. What is the relationship between the x value (e.g 3.6) and the z score?
3. How is the probability of the event (3.6 to 5 pounds of waste) related to a specific area under the curve?
4. How do we determine the area between 2 z values?

The normal distribution is a fundamental statistical tool. Review the normal distribution concepts from Chapter 6 and the use of the standard normal distribution. Next use the Excel functions NORMSINV and NORMSDIST and provide examples of your usage for each function. The normal distribution will be used in the upcoming weeks.

according to the text book, some clues that the problem can be solved with the use of normal distribution are as follows: It fits many human characteristics, such as height, weight, length, speed, IQ, scholastic achievement, and years of life expectancy, among others. In addition, most items produced or filled by machines are normally distributed. In this problem, we are discussing pounds of human waste, which could fall within any of the above categories. Because of its many applications, the normal distribution is an extremely important distribution. In theory, the normal distribution is asymptotic to the horizontal axis. That is, it does not touch the x-axis, and it goes forever in each direction. The reality is that most applications of the normal curve are experiments that have finite limits of potential outcomes. In Problem 6.3, the probability event is between 3.6 & 5 pounds, which gives us a finite limits of potential.

Some of the clues to normal distribution is the frequency of the bell shape in various data sets. One of the clues that was found is the mean, mode and median are equal. When analyzing the data set the data values will tend to cluster around the mean. The normal distribution occurs naturally instead of being man made. The symmetrical bell shape gives the statistician the ability to identify and calculate the normal distribution based on the peak sides are mirror images. Based on the frequency a person can expect certain outcomes to occur in a certain range of the bell curve. Other characteristics of normal distribution are it is unimodal and asymptotic.For example the likelihood of a person having a certain eye or hair color can be attributed to family history. The normal distribution can be look at how long tires will last on a car based on the distance, frequency and weather conditions. One of the noted examples that we can look at is results of a test. They will be always be a high and low score but most of the students will fall in a group of similar test
