[SOLVED] United Airlines Poor Performance
From the syllabus: Final Project: The goal of this assignment is again to apply concepts from the textbook to real-world phenomena, the only difference is that you will be compiling information from a range of sources. Notice that in the prior assignments, the information was all contained (effectively) within a single source (either the case study or the article). This time, you need to dig deeper and compile the information you need to complete the project as requested. Find an example of a firm that is performing badly and/or in need of a new strategy, preferably a well-known firm about which you can find information online. (The firm I have chosen is United Airlines) Requirements: This is an individual written assignment (3 page, double-spaced, Times New Roman font, 1-inch margins). You need to keep track of your information and provide a citation to any outside source of information that you use directly. Citations should be in APA format but only to provide a general sense of the source (in other words, don’t go crazy about apa citation formats). One good resource is IBISWorld US Industry Reports (NAICS). You can access them using ODU Librarys Database finder. Please adhere to the document posted on Blackboard that highlights the details of the assignment. (I dont know what you have access to, but I can provide you with access to these resources if you need them) Grading: Grades will depend on both adherence to the structure as well as the content. Please see the template document for details on how many points will be taken off from a structural point of view. Content will be based on the subjective assessment of the instructor. Source of Information: Where to find the information? This is an unguided research project and the selection of the company and the topic at hand is entirely up to you. You are simply to adhere to the guidelines as requested in the writing format and the template, but what you write is up to you. Thus, your sources matter and the company you select will depend on the information that is available / accessible on that company. I would like for you to spend some brief time talking about how the entire airline industry is struggling as a whole. Talk about how the pandemic has really stagnated all the airlines. As specified before, I have selected United Airlines for this project. More details of format and such will be in the word document attached. Talk about the cuts United has already had to make and some future cuts coming soon. As for the concepts, here are a few things I think would be good to be touched on: Horizontal Integration: How can United expand itself within the industry to turn things around? Should it merge or make any acquisitions? Or should they sell off parts of it’s business in order to stay alive? Is there any room for possible vertical integration? Maybe look for possible cooperative relationships (i.e. quasi integration or strategic alliances) and how this can be built for long-term success Ethical issues: has United had any ethical dilemmas recently? Anything concerning their staff or their customers? Could they have handed this differently? Organizational Culture: what are United’s values? Is it a healthy environment? You do not have to answer all of these questions. I just think these would be a few good potential paths to go down. If United needs to restructure how do you think they would do that? What are some areas they are waisting their resources?
