Social Psychology Concepts in a Conflict

For the assignment, select a conflict you were, are, or could potentially become involved in.  Use the concepts about social psychology in the article by Claudia Seymour, “Social Psychological Dimensions of Conflict” as strategies to resolve that conflict. Answer the questions from each category in that article that could help bolster resolution of that conflict.  Acknowledging History:  What from the past (both positive & negative) in this relationship could be acknowledged to start the resolution in an open, honest way? 1.    Perceptions:  What is your perception of how you each value the other, as well as the potential distribution of power between the two of you, and any potential threats? 2.    Identity: Since conceptions of self-identity provide the lens through which we view conflict, how can you frame your self-identity to engage in the conflict in the most productive way (for both of you) and satisfying way (for you)? 3.    Recognizing Fears:  What fears might you have about the conflict process that you can acknowledge & therefore potentially diffuse? 4.    Learning Empathy/According Legitimacy:  Since we all tend to see our side positively & the other’s side negatively, how can you alter your perspective to be more empathetic of the other?  What aspects of the other’s stand/goal/want can you recognize and therefore acknowledge as legitimate?
