Thinking about Maier’s article “Think Wage Inequality is Bad? See Benefit Inequality” and Gengler’s article “Getting the Most our of the U.S. Healthcare System: Understanding People in their Social Worlds” — what’s a key idea from each that you think is important, and why is it important?  We are all experiencing a pandemic that is affecting our lives and society in extreme ways. What is important to you about what is going on right now in our world with COVID-19, and how do you feel this relates to the materials for this week, and/or what we’ve been learning about this semester? 1.    In Shapiro’s article “The Hidden Cost of Being African American,” he argues that wealth inequality is key to reproducing racial inequality. What specific examples did he give to help support this claim? 2.      Discuss a specific example of what you feel was the most significant way class inequality affected the people in the film “The Working Poor and Homeless in the USA”  3.      What information provided in the PDF and video lectures about trends in class inequality came as a surprise to you or interested you most? You can discuss either the powerpoint or video lecture, or both if you like. 1. When it comes to the history of how race was socially constructed in the U.S., what specific example from “Race: Power of an Illusion – The Story We Tell” do you feel illustrated this most effectively?   2. The film “Race: Power of an Illusion – The House We Live In,” discusses multiple ways in which arenas like law, citizenship, and housing participated in maintaining racial inequality in the US.  Explain how information from this film helps to debunk one of the “Five Fallacies of Racism” that Desmond and Emirbayer discuss in their article “What is Racial Domination?”(pg. 342-344).    3. Reflect on Desmond and Emirbayer’s article “What is Racial Domination?” Discuss a point in this article that you feel is important for us to think about when analyzing race and racial domination. What is an issue in society today that you feel needs attention and activism towards social change? Discuss specific ways you imagine we could work towards social change around this issue, guided by the discussion in Johnson’s article “What Can We Do?” Use specific examples from Johnson! Discuss three of the examples of social change movements / campaigns from the activity PDF titled “Social Change Examples” (not examples from the PDF lecture titled “Week 15 Lecture: Social Change”). What do you feel these movements are specifically trying to improve about society, and what is your assessment of the methods they are using to fight for change? (use specific examples to demonstrate you’ve looked at the provided materials)
