This project will address the selection of one large social problem and will follow the analytical framework given at the end of this syllabus. The research paper will be 10-12 pages in length and will follow APA format including cover page, abstract, font size of 12, Times New Roman font, 1-inch margins, properly formatted in-text citations, and full reference page in APA format. Analytic Framework for Project 1. Problem Description a. What is the problem? Discuss the framework (Functionalist, Conflict, etc.) b. Analysis of the problem i. What is the history/background of the problem? ii. State both negative and positive effects of this problem. iii. What individuals, groups, organizations, and social institutions are involved? iv. What values, norms, issues are involved? 2. Causes of the problem a. What sociological perspectives are involved? b. What social factors (causes) are involved? 3. Solutions to the problem a. What solutions are proposed? By whom (state individuals, groups, etc.) b. Which causes are addressed? Which are not? c. What solutions work? Cite research d. Do additional problems arise from the proposed solutions? 4. Franciscan Connections a. Where can you make connections to the Franciscan mission? To the RISES values of Neumann? How might these values lead to alternative to solutions or alternative views of the social problem?
