You might be surprised to see that many of your clothes are manufactured in the same countries.  This project will concentrate on the people and places where the products that you actually wear are produced. Assignment Overview: In this assignment you’ll identify a favorite piece of clothing and perform some basic research on the company that made it, trying to find out more about where it was made, how it was made and who made it. Step 1: THINK Before doing research on your specific clothing company (or country of manufacture), first think about what you currently know about your clothes.  For example: Where were the clothes that you are wearing today made? Where was the fabric made? Who grew the cotton or wool, or produced the nylon? Does the production process generate pollution? Who sewed the clothes?  How old were they?  How much were they paid? Step 2: RESEARCH Research how your favorite item of clothing was made.  Visit the company’s website and see what they say about how clothes are made. What do you learn about where/how the clothes are produced and sold? Look at the tag and see the country in which the garment was produced, and then find out some data on the working conditions in that country. What is the relationship of the clothing manufacturer to the economy of that country? Step 3: WRITE Write a 2-3 page paper on your favorite piece of clothing, which includes the following sections: ? Introduction: a brief description of your favorite article of clothing ? Company Labor Policies: In this section describe what you learned about your company’s labor policies.  Do they have guidelines for how workers are treated or paid in their factories?  What do they say about labor costs on their website or in the Annual Report? ? Country Data: What are wage and working conditions like in the country in which your clothing was made? How much is the average worker paid?  What worker protections are common? ? Corporate and Consumer Responsibility:  In this section you will take a side and argue whether or not you feel it’s important to know where and how your clothing was made.  If you do think it’s important, do you feel it’s the consumer’s responsibility to learn?  Or is it the company’s responsibility to inform?
