What role did the Smartphone play in the George Floyd incident and the subsequent protests that occurred (and still continue) in the United States and around the world? Things to think about – What does this tell us about the: – significance of the Smartphone in our lives? – skills and literacies that are needed to thrive (and survive) in the Smartphone Era? -affordances of the Smartphone for collective action and social justice? -risks and constraints for personal safety and privacy in the Smartphone Era? -unintended implications (positive and negative) of Smartphone implementation for social movements and advocacy? -unforeseen consequences of Smartphone integration in our daily lives? There are many ways that you can respond to this question, various ways that you could approach this, and many things you can argue and discuss. You are going to use the things you have learned in the course and apply it here in a focused and organized manner (don’t get overwhelmed by all things you can discuss here, you won’t be able to talk about it all – it’s too huge). You need to include THREE (3) course readings from any module, these readings can be utilized anywhere in the submission that makes sense to you. And, you need to include THREE (3) outside sources in the discussion section (one for each point). That’s six in total (minimum). The format of your submission must include (this is also the rubric): Introduction (1-2 paragraphs) -offers some context for the research question -clearly responds to the research question -sets up the paper: provides thesis/argument and outlines support Discussion (3-6 paragraphs) -offers three discussion points to support the argument -each discussion point is supported with at least one outside source -the argument is compelling, convincing and properly supported -offers critical analysis rather than descriptive commentary Conclusion (1 paragraph) -recaps the original question & the arguments made -offer some bigger picture insights and thoughts; where do we go from here? Other -the three module readings are used effectively in the paper -clear writing style with careful attention to grammar, punctuation and paragraph structure -the argument is threaded together throughout the paper with strong topic sentences -sources are cited in APA format -includes a reference list formatted in APA with three module readings & three outside sources used Important Notes: -The tone of this submission will depend on the student. You can either write in persuasive or opinion writing (first person/emotion based), or argumentative writing, in which you are proving a point with evidence (third person/logic based). It is up to you, but keep the tone consistent throughout. -You are required to stay within the minimum and maximum word count, or you will be penalized one mark. In-text citations are included in the word count. Reference list is not included in the word count. APA format does not include titles, page numbers, or running headers in the word count. -You must include three course readings (any module) in your submission (these can go anywhere it makes sense for your submission). -You must include three outside sources to support the argument you are making – one for each discussion point. Academic peer reviewed articles are always more credible. -You can absolutely use more sources after the minimum has been met. -Do not use any direct quotes in your submission. You will be penalized one mark if you use ANY direct quotes. Paraphrase and cite properly. You can restate the assignment question without penalty.
