[Get Solution] Essay on Huckleberry Finn

Essay on Huckleberry Finn The Situation — Your Opinion Is Needed For this essay, imagine that you are the parent of an 11th grade high school student whose teacher was planning to teach Huckleberry Finn during this school year. However, because a group of parents have petitioned the school board, there will be a special meeting held to determine whether the book should continue to be taught in the school. The main objections to the book being taught are its use of the “N-word” and negative portrayals of African Americans which the parents say creates discomfort among the students. Parents on both sides of the issue have contacted you and asked for your support, and as an active member of the Parent Teacher Organization you feel a responsibility to weigh in on this issue. The Opposition Parents opposed to teaching the book reference other schools that have banned this novel in recent years, that mainly believe that “other novels that didn’t require students to feel humiliated or marginalized by the use of racial slurs” (Links to an external site.) could be taught instead. The Supporters Parents in support of the book being taught site First Amendment rights and “a duty not to give in to pressure to suppress unpopular or controversial ideas.” (Links to an external site.) Which side will you take? Does Huckleberry Finn deserve the importance among literary works granted by Ernest Hemingway when he said, “All modern American literature comes from one book by Mark Twain called ‘Huckleberry Finn’”? Or, have the racial slurs in this book obsoleted its message? Or, as some claim, is it a racist novel? In this essay, you will explain your position (you have been specifically asked to submit a written statement). To prove your point (on whichever side you take), you will need to examine and explain the value or lack of value in two to three specific episodes in Huckleberry Finn. To give your argument more weight in this very tense discussion, you will want to research what literary critics have said about the book over the years, using these positions to both support your views and refute the opposition. Professor’s Advice You may want to see what has been happening at other schools on this issue to understand both sides of the argument. From there, the section of our text “Critical Controversy” (291) may be helpful in guiding ideas for this project. Part of this process will include consulting at least two additional (and academic) sources to support your position. Be very specific in making your points and use quotations (cited) from the novel itself and from each of the library sources. Your two researched sources should be from either Peer Reviewed Journals, books published by an academic press, or original source materials (author’s journal, letters, autobiography, etc.), but you may include one additional source so long as it is clearly relevant to the focus of your paper. Please remember that you MUST cite from ALL sources you consult, particularly the two that are required for them to count. The best papers will apply careful interpretation of the text and clear articulation of the writer’s ideas about the primary and secondary sources consulted. Paper Details – See Rubric for Specific Evaluation Criteria Must be between 4 to 6 pages (less than 4 pages will not receive a passing grade) MLA Style should be applied; MLA changed in 2016 to MLA 8 – please refer to your MLA Style Handbook or Purdue OWL online at: https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/747/01/ (Links to an external site.) Use at least TWO (2) Peer Reviewed Sources in your paper Papers must be submitted to Canvas through TurnItIn To receive full credit papers must be submitted by _______ (See Canvas for dates) Late papers will receive a penalty 2 points per day late for up to three days lateness; the assignment will close on the third day following the due date Submission after the third day following the due date will ONLY be approved in cases of documented hardship on a case by case basis. You must meet with your professor to request this extension and explain the hardship. Note that “Literature Resource Center” and “Opposing Viewpoints” are useful sites to begin your ideas. However, they should only be used as “springboards” for this assignment and do not count as “Peer Reviewed.” Rubric for Essay #1 – Huckleberry Finn Area of Evaluation Points Introduction includes a clear thesis that tells the reader what types of evidence from the novel and research will support the points that the writer will make. A solid thesis describes what central idea you will explain and what key points will be used to prove your perspective. 10 Points Analysis · Carefully examines multiple facets of the text in a consistent manner · Considers more than one possibility when making speculations about the text and its author · Consistently uses supporting concrete evidence from the reading for ALL points made 60 Points Conclusion clearly connects points made in the body of the essay with the thesis statement, offering some new insight (NOT NEW INFORMATION) into the perspective discussed. 10 Points Use of Peer Reviewed Sources: At least TWO sources are from Peer Reviewed Journals, books published by academic press, or original source materials (author’s journal, letters, autobiography, etc.); ONE additional source may be from a non-peer-reviewed non-academic source. Each source is briefly explained through a standard annotation that will be included in the Works Cited (including summary, evaluation of bias, and relevance to the paper’s focus). Additional sources should be Peer Reviewed. 10 Points MLA Citation – Proofreading – Grammar & Mechanics All sources are cited using MLA format; an Annotated Works Cited (Links to an external site.) is included; essay is free of punctuation and grammatical errors. Please consult your style guide or Purdue University OWL for specifics on MLA citation: https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/747/01/ (Links to an external site.) Please note that MLA 8 requires you to include a Permalink for each digital source used. A lack of citation or inadequate citations for sources used and consulted is plagiarism which will result in a ZERO for this assignment, and possibly the course; in addition, your name may be referred to administration for further institutional disciplinary action.
