Instructions from my instructor:  “With specific reference to the relevant readings, choose and answer one of the following questions in an essay of 2-3, double-spaced pages (600-1000 words).  This is an opportunity for you to demonstrate your mastery of the course material and to craft the knowledge you have acquired into original interpretation. You should say as much as possible in as few words as possible. To help you remove all fluff from your papers, I encourage you to use the Excel Writing Center. If you participate in an on-line consultation with them, I will add 5 points extra credit to your paper grade. Please submit an electronic copy of your paper on Canvas by 5:00pm on Wednesday, 4 November.  There will be a three-point penalty (out of 100) for each day that it is late. Write in Times New Roman, 12 pt. font. The writing should be polished, thoughtful, and error-free. The electronic format should be Microsoft Word (.doc). Based on Tocqueville’s descriptions of “aristocracy” and “democracy,” how well have Americans embraced the virtues, and tempered the vices, of the modern democratic age? How have Christianity and the Puritan founding of New England influenced the history of American political thought? How have John Locke, the Declaration of Independence, and “classical liberalism” influenced the history of American political thought? How have Adams, Madison, and “constitutionalism” influenced the history of American political thought? Does American politics today operate according to the “rule of law” or the “rule of will”? How have the ideas of the Anti-Federalists, what some might call “classical republicanism,” influenced the history of American political thought? What lessons from the Anti-Federalists can we apply to American politics today? In what ways were the Federalists, who argued for ratification of the United States Constitution, right and wrong in their predictions about how American politics would operate under the Constitution? Which of their ideas are most useful for us today? Was the original presidential selection system designed by the Founders able to prevent demagoguery? Is the current presidential selection system in use today able to prevent demagoguery? If not, what reforms could help? How were Garrison, Thoreau, Douglass, and Lincoln similar, and different, in their anti-slavery arguments? If they are different, whose position is most commendable? How were Croly’s ideas similar to, or different from, Hamiltonian Federalism and Jeffersonian Republicanism?” Don’t worry about the references from relevant readings, I can add some in later. It’s supposed to be 600-1000 words, but 550 is fine. I would recommend one of the prompts that’s more broad or general like prompt 3, but feel free to pick any.
